Jazz em Agosto 2025: Lisbon’s Music Horizon Expands with Stellar Festival!

À Lisbonne, le festival Jazz em Agosto 2025 ouvre grand l’horizon musical

The 41st edition of Jazz em Agosto, covered by Les Inrocks, was a treasure trove of singular, vibrant experiences, epitomized by the masterful performance of the trio MOPCUT with special guests MC Dälek and Moor Mother.

Since its inception in 1984 by the Gulbenkian Foundation, Jazz em Agosto has risen to become one of Europe’s most esteemed jazz festivals. This distinction largely stems from its rigorous artistic direction, which diverges from conventional and clichéd forms.

We are navigating the emergence of a new world, where the unknown vastly overshadows our certainties. Music will continue to play a crucial cathartic and redemptive role in this journey. It will remain a medium for gathering and resistance, for alternative perspectives and hope, while breaking new ground,” write José Pinto (artistic director) and Rui Neves (programmer) in their joint statement introducing the 2025 edition, which took place from August 1 to 10, 2025.

These words – resonating with the 2019 edition’s theme of resistance – clearly signify their lofty view of music and their commitment to supporting the most daring contemporary creations without geographical limitations. Under their guidance, the Lisbon-based festival embarks on a decidedly free journey, open to a variety of unexpected new developments.

A Spectrum of Soundscapes

The term “jazz” at this festival refers not just to a musical style but to a mindset, a way of engaging with the world, an altruistic and explorative approach, and an invitation to partake in the irreducible immediacy of the moment. Jazz em Agosto willingly ventures into rock, contemporary music, and electronic (among other genres), traversing diverse soundscapes and celebrating the joy of bold hybridization.

The festival’s two majestic stages – the outdoor amphitheater, adorned with greenery, and the indoor auditorium, backed by large windows overlooking the beautiful surrounding park – provide an optimal setting for the musical performances.

Having attended the latter half of the 2025 edition, one of the highlights was the concert by MOPCUT, an international trio consisting of Chinese-American vocalist and electronic musician Audrey Chen, French guitarist Julien Desprez, and Austrian drummer Lukas König. They were joined by MC Dälek, a well-known activist in alternative hip-hop, and Moor Mother, a leading figure in the most innovative contemporary jazz: two powerful voices from the American scene, featured on MOPCUT’s new album (RYOK, released in May), each bringing their unique expressiveness – striking for MC Dälek and mesmerizing for Moor Mother.

Protest Poetry

The world premiere at Jazz em Agosto by this elegant quintet took the form of a continuous set (about 75 minutes), creating a pulsating sonic magma throughout: a mix of spiritual jazz with rebellious rock and striking hip-hop, infused with fervent protest poetry. An absolute favorite!

Less overwhelming but still impressive was the X-Ray Hex Tet, a British sextet led by pianist Pat Thomas, featuring notably a drummer (Crystabel Riley) and another percussionist (Paul Abbott). Their music, far from being noisy, elegantly navigates between different spheres and is particularly noted for its emphasis on silence.

Forward-Looking Momentum

The festival closed with another expanded ensemble, namely the septet of American vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, whose jazz, tinged with delicate Afro-Latin hues, cleverly combines a forward-looking momentum with a festive spirit.

On a distinctly more minimalist note, the highly eclectic American guitarist Shane Parish delivered a charming solo concert consisting of airy reinterpretations of various pieces (such as Pithecanthropus Erectus by Charles Mingus and Birthday by the Sugarcubes), following his recent album Repertoire, released in 2024.

Last but not least, the live creation by the duo Elias Stemeseder (harpsichord, piano, electronics) & Christian Lillinger (drums) based on their latest album, Antumbra: full of dynamics and relief, a remarkable musical dialogue – amplified by crackling abstract video projections – at the crossroads of jazz, electronic, and contemporary music. As surprising as it is stimulating, this performance perfectly embodies the spirit of openness and creativity inherent to Jazz em Agosto.

The 41st edition of Jazz em Agosto took place from August 1 to 10, 2025.
