Maker Faire Atlanta Coming To Downtown Decatur This Weekend!

    Decatur Metro | September 28, 2015 | 1:10 pm

    makerbanner

    From the Decatur Makers…

This weekend, downtown Decatur will be swarming with Makers from all across the region for Maker Faire Atlanta 2015 (http://makerfaireatl.com).

This year the Faire has over 200 makers from all across the region and has expanded onto the DHS football field.  The green space on Trinity and Commerce will have Drone racing, too!  You can see robot battles, glassblowing, fiber arts, a live interview with Andy Weir (author of the Martian), and the entire DHS gym will be full of kids activities (Innovators Playground).

There is also a free education conference http://makedu.org at the Faire where over 200 educators will gather to learn about how design thinking and project based learning techniques can improve STEAM education in their local schools.

The Faire is FREE but in order for us to get a solid headcount (which helps us get sponsors that keep the Faire free) we are asking that people get a ticket at
    http://www.eventbrite.com/e/maker-faire-atlanta-2015-registration-18125000364

Decatur Makers has a large presence at the Faire, so if you want to pitch in and volunteer for a shift to support your local makerspace, sign up at http://vols.pt/yFUQLF

You can also volunteer for the Faire as a whole by signing up at http://makerfaireatl.com/call-for-volunteers

Decatur Bike Theft On the Increase; Register Your Bike with DPD!

    Decatur Metro | September 28, 2015 | 12:22 pm

    bike registration

From Decatur Police Lt. Jennifer Ross…

Since the beginning of the year there have been 77 reported bicycle thefts within the City of Decatur.  There has been a noticeable increase in bicycle thefts since August 1, 2015.  During this time there have been 38 bicycles stolen, 9 from the north side of Decatur and 29 from the south side of Decatur.  Of the 38 stolen bicycles, 18 had been secured with some sort of locking mechanism, 9 were unsecured and 11 were stolen during a burglary of a garage or shed.  There were 19 bicycle thefts during night time hours, 11 during the day, and 8 with a multi day time frame.

The majority of the thefts have occurred in the Oakhurst and Winnona Park neighborhoods.  Of the 38 bicycles taken since August 1st, owners were only able to provide serial numbers for 7.  It is important to keep record of the brand, model and serial numbers of all of your bicycles.  Serial numbers for bicycles are most often stamped into the bottom of the frame or on a small metal placard on the bottom of the frame.  Serial numbers are important because police can only enter stolen articles onto the national database if we are provided with the serial number for the item stolen.

You can also register your bicycle with the Decatur Police Department at one of our registration events.  Bicycle registration includes providing owner contact information, having the manufacturer and serial number documented and having a numbered decal applied to and a photo taken of your bicycle.  The process takes just a few minutes.  Registering your bicycle allows officers to look up recovered bicycles and contact the owner and allows for us to quickly look up the needed information about your bicycle if it were to be stolen.  The information is kept in a secured database only accessible by police department staff and there is NO CHARGE to register your bicycle.

The next bicycle registration will be held Friday, October 2, 2015 from 4pm-7pm at Columbia Theological Seminary, 701 South Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030.  We will be in the parking lot off of Kirk Road. Look for the blue tent.

Yea! Student Art Sale On Decatur Square This Saturday

    Decatur Metro | September 25, 2015 | 4:04 pm

    DAA-featured-image-yea-2015-704x455

From the Decatur Arts Alliance website…

    Saturday, Sept. 26 • Noon- 4 pm
Arts Event on the Square in Downtown Decatur

Returning for its third year, this wildly popular one-day arts event has been embraced by local students grades K-12 as a way to showcase their creativity and talent to the public. Shop at the juried outdoor artists market or enjoy live performances at the community bandstand!

Look for the big tent on the plaza packed with student artists showing off a bounty of jewelry, paintings, photography, drawings, culinary delights, and handcrafted goods, all for sale.

On the Community Bandstand is a nonstop line-up of high energy performances from wild-and-wooly rock combos to blues acts, singer-songwriters, soloists, and more.

“The quality of the applications for YEA! continues to amaze us. It’s exciting to see how much talent Decatur students possess,” says Angie Macon, executive director of the Decatur Arts Alliance. “We are so proud to provide a venue that connects our creative students with an arts loving public and get students to consider art as a career.”

The young artists gain practical experience in event organization, marketing, and sales of their art work. They are coached by the DAA staff, with participation by staffers from Decatur’s Children and Youth Services division, who have developed a successful summer entrepreneurs program.

This event is made possible by a generous grant from the Decatur Craft Beer Festival.
