Decatur Police Remind Drivers To Slow Down with Start of School Next Monday

The Decatur Police Department sent out this announcement…
City Schools of Decatur students are headed back to school next Monday, August 3, 2015. We will have more traffic to include vehicles, buses and big & little pedestrians and cyclists on main roads and neighborhood streets. Please plan on allowing more time for your commute and PLEASE slow down and pay extra attention as excited students head back to class. We will have additional officers on duty in and around the school zones to remind everyone school is back in session.
Reduced speeds for school zones are indicated by either flashing lights and/or signage with the times for the school zone posted. Flashing lights are not required or posted for every school zone. You must also obey the times indicated by signage posted for school zones.
Also, please remember that you must stop when the school bus is stopped and visual signals on the school bus are activated. Visual signals include red and amber flashing lights and stop sign. Amber flashing lights indicate the bus is slowing to stop. Red flashing lights and the stop sign indicate the doors are opening. You must stop for both. Do not proceed until the bus resumes motion or visual signals are no longer activated.
Atlanta Public Schools start back on Wednesday, August 5, 1015 and DeKalb County students return to school on Monday, August 10, 2015.
The only statement of GA state law I have read says this: “Once the flashing lights have turned red and the stop signs have extended from the side of the bus, it is unlawful for any vehicle to pass the stopped school bus while it is loading or unloading passengers.” It may be sensible to stop for yellow lights, but is not doing so a ticketable offense?
Here it is a few hours before the school Meet and Greet events, and there has been next to no communication about parking and pick-up/dropoff procedures for Renfroe and DHS. Both schools now have only one open parking lot – and both of these are limited by trailers and a bus turnaround.
The new Renfroe principal did reference a plan on the school website, but as of 1 pm, I was not able to locate this plan. Shouldn’t a small district have better communication? I can only hope that the new superintendent will place a lot more emphasis on communication.
I predict chaos this afternoon around Renfroe/DHS followed by pure gridlock Monday morning.
Don’t know about RMS but my DHS child’s schedule packet received the other day included detailed information about parking and drop-offs. The DHS email that came today also had some info.
Ah the paper copy! I must admit that I haven’t seen the packet, but shouldn’t they have something online?
I would think RMS and DHS kids could walk to school and wouldn’t need to be dropped off / picked up 🙂
And they provide a bus for anyone who lives more than a mile from the school.

But he (I’m assuming “he”) does have the honor of being the first complainant of the school year. So he’s got that going for him.
This will be my 6th Year as a Renfroe parent and the first time I remember a principal referencing a parking/drop off plan so this year seems like better communication. It is entirely possible that I just haven’t been paying attention.
Do you guys know what time morning drop off and afternoon pickup traffic thins out around the middle school? I’ve grown accustomed to taking college around 7:45am and at 4:45pm with no traffic while school’s been out. Wondering if I need to find a new route now that school’s back in.
Those times should not be greatly impacted by the middle school.
The traffic is already hideous with all of the new construction going on. It’s really going to be bad with school starting back.
