Mayor Pro Tem Fred Boykin Stepping Down at the End of the Year

    Decatur Metro | January 26, 2017 | 11:35 am

The AJC reports that Mayor Pro Tem Fred Boykin – who’s been on the Decatur City Commission since 2000 – is planning on stepping down from his commission seat at the end of the year.   According to the piece, the Bicycle South founder and cycling advocate plans to spend more time on his new boat, which is docked in Ft. Myers, FL.

Qualifying for the open seat on the city commission isn’t until August.

Ditto, Fred will be missed. Thank you, Fred, for your emphasis on making Decatur a friendly, walkable, cycle-able, livable, forward-looking community!

Thank you for your service, Mr. Boykin. I haven’t always agreed with you, but I don’t think anyone can deny that you helped make Decatur into the place it is today. You’ve earned some fun on that boat!

I really appreciate Bill Banks’ AJC article, but want to make sure that folks know the boat is a 2000 model year USED trawler. It’s new to me, but I’m the third owner. It’s been a pleasure to work with so many great people in Decatur and the metro area. Decatur is truly a special place and the great majority of that is due to the efforts of local residents, staff and elected officials. I’ve been lucky to play a small role in all of that and it’s remarkable to see Decatur today compared to what it looked like 30 plus years ago when I bought my first home in Oakhurst on West Hill Street.

I’ve got a year left on the City Commission and I plan to be as engaged as I’ve always been.. Thanks for everyone’s support!

Just one small request before you go: Can you please secure us a 77 acre park at no cost to the residents? That would be a nice legacy and we could call it “Boykin’s Badlands.” 🙂

        Thanks for your service!

Be a great place to build a pump track for kids, and a fitting parting gift from a long-time advocate for bike infrastructure and safety! 🙂
