Kimball House Now Open

You know that dream where you visit a random selection of Decatur landmarks and find yourself waited on by a revolving door of familiar faces from the Brick Store? This week, fantasy becomes fact, my friends.
In case you haven’t already heard via annoyingly gushing comments from friends (Facebook or meatspace), the Kimball House is now open. J_T sent in this photo late last night of the scene.
Atlanta Magazine has some slightly more sober photos and a nice “sneak peak” over on its website.
If you pan the photo left you might find me sitting at the corner table. Had a great time there last night! Food is really good as are the cocktails. Amazing selection of oysters.
It was a mad house, and I’ll definitely be back.

the food was excellent (our table sampled about half the menu), the drinks were top notch (as you would expect with Miles behind the bar), the place looks very good, and i can’t wait to return.
THe description of the menu sounds awesome. With Kimball House and Mar, I foresee many walks to East Howard in my future.
Dropped in for drinks (Three Taverns, for the extra-local thrill of it, while the Mrs. enjoyed another Milesean masterpiece cocktail) and oysters last evening and agree with all the accolades so far. Not necessarily cheap by any means but high value for dollars spent — in terms of taste, service, experience, atmosphere, etc. Will definitely be back. Probably regularly.
Get something great in the Ice House space and East End Dequator will emerge as a formidable foe for West End Dequator. Game on!
We went on the night it opened. I enjoyed it, but I think they are going to need to adjust the prices on the oysters. We were there during happy hour and the oysters were $1.00 to $1.50 each. They’re normally $2.50 to $3.50 each. That’s what we pay in NYC! Also, the beef tartare should be served with toast points. I’ll be back, but it’s definitely expensive.
We went last night. Drinks were great and so was toro and oysters. We will be back.
Made the mistake of stopping in Friday night as a kickoff to celebrating our 10th anniversary. Were told it would be ~90 mins if we wanted a table, which wasn’t a huge surprise on Friday night the week of opening. That was fine as we were just there for a drink, maybe an appetizer. Actual bar was full, but we were ushered to the “gentleman’s bar” in the back corner, which was actually a cozy little spot. We were given menus and told that the roving bartender would be by to take our orders shortly. But after 20+ minutes of making eye contact with (first) and then actively trying to flag down (second) several likely looking servers who met our gaze and promptly turned away, and then asking a hostess twice if someone could please take our order with no result, we gave up and left. Had a happy ending though, as we nixed our previous plans and had no problem landing a walk up table at Cakes & Ale (reconfirmed as our favorite place in town) and had a wonderful meal.
Glad others are enjoying Kimball House and wish the owners well. But I doubt we’ll be back until things cool off a little bit.
Don’t worry. Pretty soon nobody will go there anymore because it’s too crowded.
The food was terrible. And such tiny portions!
Went last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Happy Hour oyster prices had many to choose from for $1-1.50 a pop. Interesting menu, had a bean and pepper salad that was $5ish and delish, plenty to share as a starter and a clam with fettuccine dish for $14 that was also share-able. Will get crowded, too cool of a spot, right on trend, perhaps the best spot in Decatur right now and one I will recommend.
Was completely crowded with a 25 minute wait on a MONDAY night! But drinks, service, and some kind of orange fried chicken dish with spinach/vegetable side were exquisite. Felt like Manhattan to me inside. Busy, trendy, successful, noisy, and expensive at all times, all days of the week. The kind of place where the men, not just the women, have put some effort into their looks and dress. Definitely not a place for impatient children or aged, slow-moving grandparents. Next time will pay more attention to what I’m wearing, casual chic as opposed to casual whatever-I’ve-been-wearing-all-day.
