Looking for a new allergist in the Decatur area. (ker-choo!) Ideas?

We use Atlanta Allergy and Asthma near Northlake, and have been very happy.

I waited in Dr. Gottleib’s office for 45 minutes Tuesday and never saw him. That’s the reason I’m looking for a new allergist.

Dr. Gottleib is well worth a 45 minute wait. He is a superb diagnostician. He will give you a thorough checkup and allergy screening. He personifies the best attributes of a caring and knowledgable physician whose recommendations produce effective results.

When and where can I raise a glass of high gravity brew or fill a growler, in thanks to Rep. Benfield’s public service, and have a share of profits donated to GreenLaw?

I really enjoyed listening to Oberlin Steel playing on the Square last night.

Shout-outs to local Cate and her O Crew!

Oberlin Steel was wonderful last night! It was not very well attended, at least when I was there. (Sadly, I didn’t arrive until about 7.) Maybe there were more people there earlier? It was a great event, and I hated to see such sparse attendance.

I arrived at 5 o’clock when the performance was announced to begin, and there was no sign of them or anyone else preparing anything. I left after about 30 minutes, because I thought I had misunderstood the time of the event. I’m sorry to have missed them — what time did the performance actually occur?

A great show. I still think of them as the Can Consortium, which they were called when I was at Oberlin. And yes attendance was sparse all the way through.

Question of the day: What would you do with the money if you had tonight’s winning ticket?

      • Daydreamer says:
        March 30, 2012 at 9:06 am

For me, buy a small island where I could spend the rest of my days out swimming, reading, lounging and zenning out in peace and quiet. See all the countries I haven’t yet been to. If I had enough left, I would do a private space flight. For others, start a school for impoverished children, something like that. Nothing terribly interesting or sexy I’m afraid.

      • LeeOnCandler says:
        March 30, 2012 at 9:16 am

I’d use part of it to fund a multi-use bridge across 285 at Ponce de Leon.

That one section of the path to Stone Mountain is a deal breaker for family and friends who are uncomfortable cycling in traffic.

Otherwise, what a beautiful ride! It’s wonderful living in a community of professionals, volunteers and donors that make things like the Stone Mountain Trail a reality.

Hopefully, I could collect it anonymously to cut down on the number of people bothering me for money. Then I would find a good lawyer/financial advisor and figure out what to do to make the money last long beyond my days on Earth. I’d also make sure my immediately family’s financial concerns were taken care of. Then I would try to purchase a large piece of property in the Decatur metro area and build a soccer complex for the DDY Soccer Club so we don’t have to beg for practice space every season.

Apparently Free-For-All Friday is not “free” for all.

            Solomon Burke

” None Of Us Are Free ”

Well you better listen my sister’s and brothers,
’cause if you do you can hear
there are voices still calling across the years.
And they’re all crying across the ocean,
and they’re cryin across the land,
and they will till we all come to understand.

            None of us are free.
            None of us are free.
None of us are free, one of us are chained.
            None of us are free.

And there are people still in darkness,
and they just can’t see the light.
If you don’t say it’s wrong then that says it right.
We got try to feel for each other, let our brother’s know that
            we care.
Got to get the message, send it out loud and clear.

            (Chorus)

It’s a simple truth we all need, just to hear and to see.
None of us are free, one of us is chained.
            None of us are free.
now I swear your salvation isn’t too hard too find,
None of us can find it on our own.
We’ve got to join together in sprirt, heart and mind.
So that every soul who’s suffering will know they’re not alone.

            (Chorus)

If you just look around you,
your gonna see what I say.
Cause the world is getting smaller each passing day.
Now it’s time to start making changes,
and it’s time for us all to realize,
that the truth is shining real bright right before our eyes.

            (Chorus and Fade)

Immediately put most of it into a legal trust, from which I’d create several foundations for causes that are near & dear to my heart (first & foremost, a transitional program/home for kids who are aging out of foster care, for whom there is virtually no safety net in our system at all). Then, I’d make sure my close friends & family were all debt-free, with a nice little cushion to keep them comfortable. Finally, I’d start traveling, and wouldn’t stop until I’d done all the stops on my bucket list. Once I did that, I’d just kick back, do charity work, and be as anonymously happy as possible. Ahhhh…one can dream!

        1. Set aside college tuition. 2. Get really, really competent, honest, and wise financial adviser and set aside enough money for retirement assuming that me and hubbie both die at age 105, have no future salaries but only earnings from investing the winnings, and assuming that the world economy never improves. 3. Retire now and work-part time at something I love even if it’s for no pay, probably involving children. 4. Reinstate an annual beach family reunion that our extended family used to do until it got too expensive for all. If there was anything left after that, buy a hybrid vehicle, increase our church contributions by 50%, buy a new bicycle, hire someone to get our house and yard in shape for resale which probably would involve at least minor renovations and major painting, buy a condo in Downtown Decatur, buy an apartment in a nice, liberal continuing care community for future use, buy new cross-country skis, in that approximate order.

I don’t have travel on my list because I plan to do that even without any winnings. My limitation there is more work schedule, school schedule, and time. I have no urge for expensive vacations or cruises, just fun with family.

Boy, I didn’t realize how greedy I am until I made this list!

        • DawgFan says:
          March 30, 2012 at 11:54 am

AHID, after cash option and taxes, you would probably receive close to $200 million. After you do items 1 thru 4, you would probably still have $180 to $190 million, so go ahead and splurge and buy yourself the few tangible items you want!

          • At Home in Decatur says:
            March 30, 2012 at 12:36 pm

Wow, now I am tempted to buy a lottery ticket. I never do because my instinct tell me I will never win, my mind tells me that I’d be better off investing or saving what would be spent on lottery tickets, and my moral compass tells me not to support gambling, even legalized gambling, because it profits off of the expectations of folks who cannot afford to gamble.

But I sure do want that beach vacation and new hybrid vehicle…..I’d like a light green Toyoto Prius, I think…………

        • At Home in Decatur says:
          March 30, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I’m feeling guilty about “increase church contributions by 50%”. That’s pretty stingy especially since Dawg Fan assures me that I’ve got money to spare. I’ll ask whether our church would prefer a lump sum, based on what financial advisor says is reasonable, or an increase in donations over time. And of course I’d continue to donate to everything I already donate to, just in larger amounts.

Now I feel so much better about myself.

Aside from paying debts, traveling, etc., I could fulfill my philanthropic fantasies… endowing one or two small local nonprofits to help them with unglamourous expenses like utilities, setting up a mini-grant program for grassroots volunteer-based groups, and financing microloans for village families in developing countries.

One of my favorite nonprofits is Rising Star Outreach, which educates kids, provides mobile healthcare, and helps people start businesses to improve life in leprosy-affected colonies of India. It’s now based in Utah but was founded here in Metro Atlanta.

Get professional advice to secure the financial futures of myself and my siblings. Pay off my mortgage and theirs, and maybe some friends’. (Having a hard time getting my head around the amount of money.) Quit working and start volunteering half-time and writing (for fun) half-time. Donate funds as well as time and energy to cherished causes. Perform deferred maintenance on my house; possibly sell it and get something smaller and/or something near water and buy a canoe. Ride Amtrak east to west and back again across US and Canada. Get re-certified for scuba diving and make some dive trips, maybe combine with volunteer work. Get a massage and a facial whenever I feel like it. Hire somebody to mow the grass. Go fishing.

I’ve said for years that after wiping out my family’s debts, blowing off some steam with some frivolous spending, and getting everything in order that I would buy a large piece of property and turn it into a learning camp for challenged and at-risk kids and young adults. A place that’s not just meant to be a temporary escape but a place where they can learn how to use what they have, get what they need, and give back of themselves when they can.

After writing about our foster dog last week, I want to publicly thank a few folks:

      1. LYNN and FRIENDS OF DEKALB ANIMALS – For getting Penny out of the shelter and to the Village Vets, who gave us a clean enough bill of health to allow her to come home rather than back to the shelter. Also, for not even being mad at me for doing probably everything possible wrong!

      2. VILLAGE VETS – For taking good care of this “throwaway” dog (Penny, not me) and for loaning us a crate when we desperately needed one in a pinch.

      3. ZSOLT and ANDREW at FROGS TO DOGS in Kirkwood – When we brought Penny home to a horrible situation because Stella would not let her in the house without trying to kill her, Zsolt went out of his way to come to our house and walk us through some emergency training techniques. We might have had no choice but to bring Penny back to the shelter if not for their help and encouragement.

      4. CARMEN and DANIEL at THE FUR SIDE in Decatur (they also have a shop in East Atlanta) – As you can imagine, after being dumped on the streets and then spending a month at one of the worst shelters in the country, Miss Penny was not quite looking and smelling her best. OK, it was really much worse than that, but you get the idea. Not only did the Fur Side fit her into their busy schedule on very short notice, they did do free of charge. What’s more, Carmen actually drove her back to our house personally so that she could help us walk her with Stella as Zsolt had suggested!

Forgive this shameless plug, but the folks above deserve our thanks and they deserve your business if you are in the need for such services! Mention J_T and I am sure they will be happy to add 10% to your bill!

Absolutely TOP of LIST is Junderscore and his MRS! And of course Stanley– and Stella too now that she’s settling down!

Folks who read J_T’s sweet posting last week on Penny’s behalf couldn’t help but have their hearts touched. Kudos to all these fine folks who’ve helped Penny to feel her tail wagging best. Please keep us posted on her progress! :0)

        • J_T says:
          March 30, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Well shucks, the Mrs and I do appreciate the kind words. I might argue that we are more suckers than sweeties, but sometimes you just do what you gotta do.

Penny is doing great! She’s on the first of her meds and all indications are that she should be healthy enough to start the actual heartworm treatments next month. After a week of needing to be crated in the house, she is now out and about with our other dogs. Stella had to put her in her place a few times but they seem to have sorted out their places and have reached at least a truce, if not a friendship yet.

It makes me mad as hell to realize that someone simply dumped this older, neglected dog on the street. Fortunately, that anger is tempered by all of the good-hearted folks who have assisted in her care. We are still looking for someone to foster her through her heartworm treatment, or better yet adopt her permanently. Of course, the longer it takes to find her better accommodations, the harder it will be for us to let her go anywhere. Now that she’s more comfortable here, all she wants to do is play with her squeaky toy and chase the tennis ball when I throw it (which neither Stanley nor Stella will deign to do, no matter how much “retriever” they may have in them!)

So, anyone looking to adopt a very sweet old lady lab, you’d better get on it. Miss Penny is winning us over very quickly!

The Mayor discussed the sidewalk smoking ordinance in his speech this week. I don’t think our storeowners are aware of it, especially considering the fact that they stand to lose sidewalk privileges should people be smoking at the tables. I see ashtrays on tables in front of some Decatur establishments. I wonder how the city plans to enforce the law.

      • Steve says:
        March 30, 2012 at 9:19 am

Has the ordinance actually been passed yet?

      • Decatur Metro says:
        March 30, 2012 at 9:57 am

I believe that only establishments applying for new alcoholic beverage licenses need to comply with this ordinance currently. The sidewalk smoking ban for renewing applicants doesn’t go into effect until October. Deets here.

When this was discussed in the commission meeting, city staff seemed to indicate that businesses were well aware that this change was being made.

        • FMFats says:
          March 30, 2012 at 10:21 am

Thanks for clarifying. Does this mean that Starbucks and Dancing Goats are not subject to the ordinance unless they apply for a beer/wine license?

            March 30, 2012 at 10:51 am

I just need to comment on the potential “improvements” on the commerce/church/clairemont roads for sidewalks and biking. My wife and I both work and we have 2 kids – we use the commerce rd to take our kids to daycare. If these “improvements” make it go down to one lane, I am sure traffic will be a nightmare. And please dont use the excuse to bike to drop your kids off. I cant! we both have to work and have to use our cars for daycare. sorry – I understand the need to make everything pedestrian friendly but us working people who cant bike to work and have family, this will make life even more hard. Sorry, Just wanted to vent…

+1 on Blake’s comments. The plan looks like a nightmare to me. I do not see how creating traffic jams through road diets makes roads safer for drivers, pedestrians, or bikers. If this plan is actually enacted I could possibly be forced to move elsewhere as both my wife and I are forced to drive this direction daily for work. I would love to walk or bike to work but like most people this is not an option.

What is the etiquette for big plastic swing seats?
The playground at Winnona Park recently got one.
I thought it’s meant specifically for children who are too big for the basket seats but have trouble staying on a regular swing.
Is it like a parking lot, where you shouldn’t park in a handicapped spot, no matter what?
Or is it just another toy, first come, first serve, until someone who needs it shows up?

      • Keith F says:
        March 30, 2012 at 10:17 am

If the swing fits…you can use it.

      • Laura says:
        March 30, 2012 at 11:11 am

I think it would probably be okay to use it. Certainly if a child who needs the swing comes along, I think it would be appropriate to vacate immediately. I have a disabled child and I think I would approach the people using the special swing to inquire about their needs if the child didn’t seem disabled. The problem is that it’s not always obvious who is disabled/needs to use the special swing and who isn’t. You might not notice that my daughter is disabled and fail to vacate the swing promptly. I might not notice that your child is also disabled and will feel like an ass when I ask you to let my daughter use the special swing. Disabled people shouldn’t have to approach an able-bodied stranger to ask them for permission to use equipment that is intended for disabled people.

I have a close family member who works in the court system and explains it this way — there truly are not ‘quotas’ but it makes sense to think that if officers are doing their jobs, they will write a certain number of tickets in a given time period. If an officer writes significantly fewer but cannot give any sort of reasonable explanation, then it has to be considered that he/she is not giving the job full attention.

      Just sayin’

Fellow dog owners and dog-aware folks, does anyone have any suggestions for places to walk a dog off-leash?

We adopted a rescue puppy two months ago, and I have been taking him to a certain park a few miles north of Decatur. Of the 20 or so other dog owners I’ve seen there, only two had their dogs on a leash. Today, there were two elderly women (not that age or gender matters) who acted somewhat indignant that my dog–who is a reasonably well-behaved puppy and who rarely jumps but will try to play with every dog he meets–was not on a leash. This brought to mind how the Jr. League brought its influence to bear to deal with some irresponsible Decatur dog owners’ use of rebar at the Adair dog park, and now I wonder if this park to the north may also somehow lose one of the things that makes it special to dog owners who want to let their dogs be dogs and not animated stuffed toys. …sorry for the dig on those two senior ladies; I couldn’t hold back my fingers.

I know it’s technically NOT okay to let dogs go offleash in any public park, but what are the unspoken rules? Where are some places where it is okay to walk dogs offleash? Thanks.

      • smalltowngal says:
        March 30, 2012 at 7:03 pm

There are four dog parks in the city of Decatur specifically designed for off-leash play. My two cents’ worth, as a lifetime dog lover and former and future dog owner: it is not OK to have your dog off-leash where prohibited. Too many kinds of mayhem are possible. Your dog may be perfectly even-tempered and well-behaved, but there is no way to know how other dogs will act or what two dogs might provoke each other to do in a particular situation. And if more than two are in the mix, then possibilities for mayhem increase exponentially. My most recent dog, who was a total sweetheart, became rather cantankerous toward other dogs when she got old, and it was extremely aggravating whenever an off-leash dog bounded up wanting to play — very stressful for her and for me, because she would only tolerate so much before getting serious about discouraging the attention, and I was more or less helpless until/unless the other dog’s owner took it under control. The other dogs meant no harm, but that didn’t matter — I can’t count the times we came close to a fight.

I can also understand why the elderly ladies in the park were not happy. Maybe your doggie would never jump on them, but somebody else’s might, and they have no way to know the difference.

There are good reasons why we have a leash law, and I can’t think of any good reason for disregarding it.

        • Decaturite says:
          March 31, 2012 at 5:51 am

I totaly agree that it’s inappropriate to ever have your dog off leash unless it’s in a designated area.
I have been subjected to a couple of different incidents where “friendly” dogs have attacked my on leash dog while we were walking. It’s very scary.

If this was at Medlock, you are not the first (nor, unfortunately, the last) person to have their dog off leash. Because of that, you probably received the frustration of many months of dogs off leash from those ladies.
I live in the neighborhood, and we frequent the park almost every day. It’s become a pretty frequent complaint on our facebook page. People completely ignore leash laws because of a myriad of reasons. I still don’t want your dog playing without a leash. It’s annoying. It’s hard to walk with puppies nipping at my heels. It’s obnoxious. Just don’t do it.

        with lists of recommended plants.
Pikes is very good for advice on plants and flowers.
Whatever you decide, the soil here is very crappy unless you amend with soil conditioner and organic matter like manure or compost. Amend, amend, amend…then go buy flowers.

I think this would make a great recurring thread, maybe “Dirty Thursdays” to share knowledge and referrals. To make it exciting, we could vow to take over the 2013 Decatur Garden Tour. Not that I can play. We love our deep shade, maybe we could bring up a few mushrooms.
