+1 very Mayberry.
Questions from a Decatur newbie: how long have those statues on the square been there? It’s just this pair of (generic?) senior citizens and President Jefferson, right? Why Jefferson, as opposed to Washington, Lincoln, or Coolidge?
Maybe because we are a Thomas Jefferson kind of place. (I wish).
I think we used to aspire to a Jeffersonian, participatory democracy. Not as sure anymore…
I think I meant to write something about that…
I seem to recall that the statue was a gift of a local businessman who was a great admirer of Jefferson. It was not commissioned or purchased by the city.

Thomas Jefferson
By George Lundeen
This statue of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence, also sits in front of the Old Courthouse.
It was dedicated by the City of Decatur on Oct. 23, 2000, to the memory of U.S. Senator Paul D. Coverdell (Jan. 20, 1939-July 18, 2000). Senator Coverdell devoted his life and career to the principles of liberty set forth by Thomas Jefferson.
“A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouths of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government.” – Thomas Jefferson
“Freedom is the genesis of all American glory.” – U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell
Does anyone know where one can get a framed picture of the sculpture? It makes a nice wedding gift.
There is a great framing place in Candler Park next to Flying Biscuit. We go there for all our custom framing and it’s owner operated.
Saw those flowers this morning as I walked to the MARTA station on my way to work!
They’re actually a fairly frequent occurrence.
Love this. Thank you to the person you left the flowers and thank you to the person you took the photo.
