Tin Drum Asia Cafe Coming to Emory Village
Decatur Metro | March 23, 2012
The Emory Wheel reports…
Atlanta-based restaurant chain Tin Drum Asia Cafe announced this month that it will be taking over Wonderful World’s space in Emory Village to open its 10th restaurant. Tin Drum features a pan-Asian menu with more than 35 items made with Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian influences.
…Wonderful World will close its business this Sunday and Tin Drum is scheduled to open within the next two weeks.

Across from Doc Chey’s?
Nooooooo! I love Wonderful World’s tiny burgers. And for a while there, when they had a beer license, they had $2 Sweetwater 420s. And as altmod has astutely noted, there is no way they are going to compete with Doc Chey’s. DC has to be Druid Hills favorite family dining…
Bad news. The area doesn’t need two Asian cafes right across the street from each other. The burgers at Wonderful World are great, as are the fries sprinkled with dill, the simple salad with a sesame dressing…why are they leaving? Every time I’ve gone, they’ve had good business. Too bad!
Especially two that are pretty disgusting.
Actually, I think both are pretty good. DC is a regular haunt and Tin Drum has a couple of menu items that I like.
Maybe Tin Drum and Doc Chey’s will battle it out to the death.
Tin Drum is not terribly good. Kind of like a confused, “Asian” Moe’s.
I eat at the Tin Drum by Georgia Tech all the time, and have always thought of it as a mediocre Doc Chey’s. Weirdest location decision I’ve seen in a while.
Will be cheaper than Doc Chey’s? Is that the business strategy? Is it like the way that Starbucks often opens up right close to independent or smaller chain coffee shops and then hopes to outcompete on price and brand recognition? (I’m always so pleased that Caribou Coffee survives at LaVista and N. Druid Hills–it has better coffee and better drive through logistics than the Starbucks across the street.)
It wouldn’t take much to get cheaper than Doc Cheys, the prices have gone up a good bit since they first opened. But I really enjoy the food and they don’t skimp on portions so there’s always leftovers. Not to mention, I had an unpleasant experience with a server there a couple of years ago, and with a quick email, they gave us 2 free meals. Very responsive, and for that they’ll always have me as a customer.
I have eaten at the Tin Drum at Lindberge. Just ok. Agree with the analogogy to Mo’s. I think it is a national chain store. Doc Chey has many local connections and far superior in quality.
NOOOO my family loves Wonderful World!!
I was considering that space for a different restaurant franchise opportunity. Oh well.
Tin Drum and Doc Chey’s are both meh.
OK, I will admit it, my name is J_T is and I love Doc Chey’s. You can stick your “authenticity” where the sun don’t shine (or where it does, for that matter) and I will happily munch away on my Thai coconut red curry with tofu. I might even cheat on the no-meat thing for a cup of the coconut chicken soup.
Damn, now I seem to be craving coconut…
My husband adores Doc Chey’s. I have to admit that I preferred an earlier iteration better.
I wish them luck but I think “Tin Drum” is a weird name for a restaurant. At least it should be a Polish restaurant. Am I the only one reminded of the Gunter Grass novel? There are a lot of adjectives to describe that novel, but the list does not include “appetizing.”
The Pad Thai at Tin Drum sucks as does its hot and sour soup. Everything else is just meh. Check out Little Bangkok on Cheshire Bridge and you’ll know why. Theirs is the best on the planet.
