Where can florescent light tubes be disposed of/recycled?
you know the kind in school ceilings all over the country.

While we are on this topic, I’d like to suggest to the City, especially its units dealing with green/environmental issues, that they make it easy to recycle compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), e.g. a drop-off somewhere. Or is there anyway they could be included in recycling pickup? Maybe in a special recyclable container so they don’t break? Waiting until the twice a year recycling day isn’t sufficient for my household. I try to save all the bulbs for 6 months but many break and I know that my family members and visitors, especially babysitters, visiting relatives, and forgetful offspring/spouse, are forgetting to recycle the bulbs and are just putting them in the regular trash. I can find convenient places to drop off hangers and batteries for recycling but not CFLs. Ikea and Home Depot are not in my usual area of travel. Other than my beeline to work and back, the City of Decatur is pretty much where we hang out. It seems environmentally flawed to have to get in the car and drive several miles solely for the purpose of dropping off recycling!

Last year I called the city public works and they said I could drop them off with them. I never got around to it but I assume it is still possible.
I have been told the same thing. You need to take the stuff to Public Works.
Hey – speaking of recycling, does anyone know where I can drop off my Christmas tree for recycling? I called the city and they stopped accepting trees on Dec. 7th.
Is my only other option really to rent a chainsaw, chop up the tree, and put it in yard waste removal bags?

As of a few days ago, you could drop it off at the East Lake community garden, which is on 2nd Ave. south of Hosea (maybe south of Memorial, I can’t remember, but I’m sure it’s on the east side of the street). They asked that you place it so it wouldn’t block other people pulling into the driveway.
The Home Depot on Lawrenceville Hwy will take them. I drop mine off at the returns area.
Home Depot takes batteries and some other things so they might also take these.
What about recycling used cooking oil? Anybody know where you can take that?

I believe they have a drop-off location on Church Street, but I think you have to register. Info is on the site. I haven’t filled my container yet so haven’t gone through the process.
Does anyone know why the Dekalb Farmer’s Market removed all the trees in the parking lot (the ones that were at the beginning of each aisle)?

That one was definitely in bad shape. Half of the trunk’s bark had fallen/been torn off for a while now. If it wasn’t already dead, it was going to be soon.
I’m planning to run in the Georgia Warrior Dash this May, and I am looking for logistics advice.
- Best time of day to run?
- I know it’s a big party, and I have two children under ten. Is it too raunchy for little eyes and ears?
- What’s it like getting around? Should we bring bikes?
- Is parking a pain?
Any answers to the above questions, or additional tips and tricks, would be great.
If no one here is able to help you, you may want to try the Runner’s World forums. I have found it helpful for similar logistics questions. Tons of Atl/GA folks on there.
I can’t speak for the GA location, but I ran the Maryland race last year on the second dy in the afternoon. The course felt like thousands of people had already run it. The condition of the course had deteriorated quite a bit. I would not recommend bikes. There usually is no good place to stow/secure them. The MD location was a pretty family friendly event. Didn’t notice too much cursing/raunchiness. Also is fun for the kids to get a turkey leg and watch people dive into the mud. Also fun to pass the pavement runners who can’t quite make the transition to steep hills and knee deep mud.
In related news, anyone running Tough Mudder? Only a month away, yikes.
Id shoot for midday on Saturday if you want maximum party atmosphere. Sunday is calmer, or so I am told. If you are ok with the kids seeing some ‘interesting’ costumes (eg, strippers in Catholic school girl outfits (my favorite), Lieutenant Dangles, nude suits with hair in the right places…) it is fine for the kiddos. Parking isnt bad, just pricey. Bike is more trouble than it is worth.

Question: Heading out of town on W. Ponce, just past the light at Trinity, when people are making a left onto Adair, is it illegal for cars to go around in the bike lane or just irritating? This always irks me for some reason….
on this forum, WB, i’ve seen several posts saying it definitely is illegal to do that.
The same goes for one street further when I’m making a left on Drexel and impatient folks speed past me on the right because I’m waiting to turn. I, at least, hope they are looking in their mirror to check and see if a bike is in that lane first. That’s wishful thinking, huh? It seems those small white speed bumps (what are they really called?) aren’t in their way at those turns?
The little bumps are called “turtles”.
The bigger bumps are called Galapagos tortoises.
So did they evolve from the smaller turtles or were they simply intelligently designed that way?
I was wondering if anyone out there is still going to the Decatur Diner. Whenever I pass by (at all times of day) there only seems to be 1-3 people inside.
2 weeks ago, while walking downtown with my spouse, we witnessed an irate customers leaving the diner having a verbal battle with a server. They continued shouting as he walked to his car on Ponce. The server yelled “you want me to kick your a**?!” To which the customer replied “Yeah, come on!” Then the server yelled “Bend over!” They both stood there shouting until the customer finally had enough and drove off. I can’t imagine what could have possibly gone so wrong that it led to that scene.
Has the ownership changed yet? I don’t know how they stay in business. Somebody call Robert Irvine!

Anyone have a good but reasonable recommendation for a tax person? Always done our own but things got a bit complex in 2011, incl. selling 2 homes, and purchasing 1 with SO. Plus, we are common-law co-habitators (I’m sure there’s an acronym in there), so not sure if that adds another layer. Anyway, we thought it might be a good idea to work with a professional.

I’d like to remind everyone of the upcoming Decatur MLK Service project this weekend.
I’ve been involved with this project from day one, and it’s an amazing effort! All work is done on City of Decatur residents’ homes.
2012 MLK Service Project Set for Jan. 14-16
The Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project is a volunteer home repair program that enables lower-income senior homeowners to remain in their homes safely, comfortably and affordably. To sign up to volunteer to make home repairs or do yard work, please contact Lee Ann Harvey, 678-553-6548, or . Please note that volunteers must be a minimum of 12 years old, unless they are volunteering through a supervised organization such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Please check first before signing up. You are invited to volunteer as an individual or as a group. Any volunteer younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a release form (Word or PDF) and bring it with them to the project.
Volunteers may work one or more of the following shifts:
• Saturday, Jan. 14: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sunday, Jan. 15: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Monday, Jan. 16: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
When you sign up, please indicate the shift(s) you have selected, whether you have any specific skills (such as carpentry, home repair, painting, drywall, plumbing, gardening/landscaping, etc.). Such skills are not necessary, but help in assigning tasks. A limited number of tools and work gloves will be available. If possible, please bring your own supplies with you to use (such as work gloves, hammers, saws, drills, and other tools; rakes, clippers, loppers and other yard work tools). Make sure to mark tools for identification purposes. We are striving to make this project more environmentally friendly, so please bring a reusable water bottle with you.
Volunteers who are able to make repairs to their own homes, those who are highly skilled, and skilled tradespeople, especially roofers, plumbers, electricians and carpenters, are crucial to helping with these much needed repairs. Other volunteers can assist the logistics team with transporting tools and materials, as well as helping to weatherize homes. The food committee is seeking donations of sandwiches and homemade desserts to feed the hundreds of hungry volunteers. Yard work is an important component of the Project. Gardeners can lead simple gardening projects. Youth will be assigned to yard work jobs.
Volunteers will meet at the Solarium at the Community Center of South Decatur, 321 W. Hill St. in the Oakhurst section of Decatur, at least a half-hour before the start of their shifts. All volunteers are invited to attend a celebration cookout on Monday, Jan. 16, at 5 p.m. at the Solarium.

Would like a recommendation for a ‘girly’ brunch place. Not necessarily in Decatur but that would be fine.
Do you need liquor? If not, Sun In My Belly is great and not far outside of Decatur. If you’re willing to go farther into the scary city, The Shed at Glenwood has great food and bottomless mimosas. I don’t know about the “girly” quotient but Mrs. J_T is also a big fan of Carroll Street Cafe in Cabbagetown (and even though they seem to have raised their prices a bit recently, I’ll admit that I always enjoy the food there very much).
Unless something has changed, I think you can bring your own sparkling alcohol to Sun In My Belly, and just buy the juice there. They even supplied flutes for us at my last birthday brunch there.
I’d also suggest the garden patio of Wahoo. I don’t go there for dinner much anymore, but still enjoy their brunch.
Cafe Alsace is kind of girly too–quiche, crepes, cafe au lait, etc. Definitely have to want French, though.

BIke theft in Decatur Heights this week. Our bikes were stolen from a locked shed that is inside of our gated backyard. The door was broken in and bikes, with U locks on them were stolen. Apparently our guard dog (aka friendly lab/mix) did not do her job. The thieves were kind enough to close the gate so she did not get away…. I have been hearing of quite a few break ins in the area, so keep your stuff locked up and an eye out for the neighbors!!
That’s terrible to hear– I’m so sorry that happened to you. But maybe (and I know this is an unpleasant prospect) your dog knew the perpetrators, and didn’t think she needed to “do her job”…something to think about.

Are those things glued down? With all the nuts flying down that street over the speed bumps, how is it that they are never knocked over or stolen?

I’ve been meaning to post this for a few weeks, but FINALLY someone somewhere got a clue and fixed that stupid bump that was in the eastbound lane of DeKalb Ave near Oxford street. Thousands of drivers knew about that bump and drifted outside of their lane every day to avoid it, but apparently it was a secret to the people who actually maintain the roads. Normally I’d be happy about this development, and I am, but it’s beyond ridiculous that it took that long to be addressed.
In other news, Baby Kroger added self checkout lanes.
I’ve always hated that bump. And wondered, why is there to begin with?
+1 Did anyone ever notice that right at that bump, there is a pedestrian sign with an arrow that pointed down to it? It was always my reminder of where the bump was, especially at night. So glad it’s gone, but I still have this slight anxiety as I approach it because the asphalt is a different color and I still want to imagine the bump is still there.

Can anyone recommend a nice local hotel–d’town Atlanta is great but not Buckhead or Perimeter– that has affordable room (food) service? I promised my daughter a hotel sleepover birthday party for a few friends but I don’t want to take out a 2nd mortgage to pay for all the services we’re probably going to incur.
The Ellis is super nice and even has a women only floor… not sure about the room service though.
Can I suggest a Staybridge Suites or something of the sort? Larger rooms, plus 2 bedroom suites (so you can have your own room while they share the 2nd bedroom and living room) – you get a kitchen so you can bring your own snacks/drinks and order pizza, plus free breakfast for all in the morning.
Just a thought.. ..
Affordable Room Service…an oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one.
This might be silly. But could you conjure up some faux room service? Make up a fake menu, put easy stuff on it that you could get take out, and call the order in to your spouse, and then have them deliver it? Might be too much hassle. But you’d avoid the fees …

Haven’t tried it myself but it gets rave reviews from a parent listserv that I’m on.
Yes! They are fabulous! My daughter has seen Dr. Doyle for early morning ear infections twice now. She and the staff are great. I haven’t seen the other doctor, but have heard wonderful things about him, too. I was so pleased that we’re switching to Dr. Doyle for primary care as well.
A shout out to my Oakhurst neighbors and DCPD … I am home from a 12 day vacation and my home is in fabulous condition. Left and returned when it was cold but had sun and temps above 80 the whole trip!!!
Did someone break in and clean and remodel the place while you were gone?
I found a part of my City of Atlanta Traffic Court experience somewhat disturbing this week. The majority of the courtroom was filled with people that could have their tickets dismissed after either producing evidence of fixing defective equipment or attendig aggressive driving school. One individual was there that was given a ticket for not having a driver’s license. She spoke no English and her spouse was there to help in translating. The officer administering the inital procedings matter of factly said that an interpreter would be there soon and that her spouse needed to leave the courtroom immediately. As a result, she was very scared and even considered leaving and facing a failure to appear.
My concern though is this….you force a spouse who is there to assist in translating out of the courtroom causing fear. But when I get to the next courtroom to have my ticket dismissed it looks like romper room. You would think that if the court system is willing to make concessions and allow parents to bring minors into the courtroom then you could have allowed the spouse to stay as well.
I’m merely commenting about this one particular situaiton which doesn’t mean that overall I do strongly feel that if you are in the US you should have some understanding of the English language.

I am so sad that I need to find my very cute and cuddly calico cat, Sam Turkey, a new home.
As my older cat ages, Sam’s begun to pester her to no end, and that’s affecting the well-being of the older cat. In addition, Sam has been unhappy since we moved to our new home — the 17 strays that hang out on our street drive her crazy. I cannot let her outside to claim her kingdom because the strays have feline leukemia and I don’t want to take the chance that she’ll catch it.
Sam is playful, active and will be a great pet for a family with children who will give her lots of attention. She is very endearing and does one of the cutest things on earth: she drinks her water by first dipping her paw in the water bowl and then licking her paw. She also knows how to play Ping-Pong — she loves batting the ball back and forth with me but she doesn’t yet know how to hold a paddle. But, she knows how to open her toy box so she can take out whatever she wants to play with that day. And one of her favorite toys? A tennis ball.
Another great thing about her is that she doesn’t like cat treats or people food so she never begs or bothers you while you eat.
I’ll have to look back at her records but she’s 4-5 years old. She was a stray that I found on Sam’s Crossing at Thanksgiving, thus her name Sam Turkey.
Is anyone interested? This isn’t an easy decision but I must do it and hope to place her in a home where she is loved. I immediately thought of Decatur Metro since so many of you have big hearts when it comes to lost/found animals.

Congratulations on your decision to get that done. EVERYONE, regardless of age, marital status, etc., should have a will if you don’t want the State of Georgia and Probate Court to make decisions for you. While you’re at it, also get a durable medical power of attorney and even a durable financial power of attorney for situations where you are incapable of making such decisions. The number of people who do not have all these instruments is appalling to me. And, if you move to another state or have moved here from another state, have them reviewed.

Also, there’s a way to set it up so that not only will your current children be your beneficiaries if both you and spouse die, but so will future children, not yet born and named. That’s a good tactic if you plan to have more children because it’s hard to remember to keep updating your will to include new children.

We need this badly too. The full job. For us, a priority is a reliable, bonded company/person. Our experience is that the big guys don’t seem interested in “small” jobs like this but this does not feel small to us. We’d pay a little more for reliable, good customer service, and speedy.
We are in the same boat…I had one of the larger renovation companies come take a look at our sad and tiny early 50s bathroom and I was told minimum $10,000 to redo it, though that includes taking it down to the studs and joists, replacing all the plumbing, etc., basically starting from ground zero. Is “minimum $10,000″ really what that job should cost?
I think that is reasonable. I did a full bathroom gut job, replaced the joists, and was about 10k ten years ago. I paid more for a top notch contractor because of water damage and what else was involved and bc it had to be turned around in a hurry. Never sorry I did it.

10K is what we were quoted for re-doing a TINY bathroom (circa 1945) in our house a few years ago by three different major renovation companies. We went with cosmetic changes instead (replacing fixtures, tiling the floor which we did ourselves) because we knew we would not recoup 10K when we went to sell it the next year (we were upgrading primarily to sell it).
I was reminded this weekend of just how delicious Cafe Alsace’s ice cream is — super creamy and inventive, original flavors!

Those useless telephone books showed up at my house. Where can they be recycled?
Just put them in your Decatur recycling bin.
I wish instead of dropping books that they could just mail request forms or some similar approach that allowed people who wanted them, to call and ask for them. God knows how much paper they use printing those things that get tossed straight away by many. Last year after the drop off, immediately took them to the farmers market and the dumpsters were overflowing with them, and the spillover was piled up all over the ground.. What a waste.
I’ll defer to anyone who knows for sure but I could swear I’ve read before that the phone companies want to get rid of the books as much or more than everyone else but that there’s some sort of regulation in place that says they have to distribute them. Or something like that.
Different story, I’m sure, with the “fake” phone books done by ad companies.
I am looking for a landscape designer/architect – Any recommendations? I have small backyard and want to make it a usable outdoor living area and want someone to tell me what to do.
So my husband just left his laptop at ATL’s airport security on his way out of town. I’ve filled out the online lost and found form, but it doesn’t look like there will be anyone in this office until Tuesday at the earliest. Anyone had any luck getting stuff back from them via another avenue?
Yes! Just last weekend the same thing happened to me. You need to visit two places: airport lost and found first. The “office” isn’t open but there are people there all night. You have to ask where the elevator is (right across from the lost and found office) and go upstairs to find it. Don’t take no for an answer. Ask the woman by the elevator to let you up.
Thanks to everyone for the good advice. Thankfully, they have located the laptop (that online form really worked!) and it’s waiting for him to pick up when he gets in tomorrow.

Next go to the woman across from South baggage claim 7 — she sits at a little podium. She is the key to getting into the oversize luggage room. Sweet talk her into letting you go in and look at all the luggage. Don’t worry about it being oversized — there is a world of stuff in there from diaper bags to ski bags.
You may not want to mention your airline or they may only let you look in one section. Ask to just let you please look at it all. My bag was in the room but I was only allowed to see Delta bags — so I didn’t spot it. On my way home, the same woman called to say they found my bag in that room.

It’s funny that some things never change. I’ve had luck over the years finding things at ATL too. Always by going in person, not by calling. I’ve found necklaces, sweaters, jackets. So even long after 9//11 and in the age of the iCloud, the best way to find a lost item is still to go to the Lost and Found and look.
BTW, everyone was super nice so my comment about not taking no for an answer was a bit out of line. They may tell you there are certain hours but someone is working lost and found around the clock. As matter of fact, you may be able to call and get someone on the phone. Markus was super nice.
My mom-in-law left a phone at security and it was returned too. They let her son dial until it rang! That was a year and a half ago.
Actually not taking no for answer, is good advice. Had a bag missing on vacation for several days, airport insisted they did not have it, but I went down there in person and they let me look in the room, and I found it in less than a minute. My takeaway from that situation – never, ever, carry a black suitcase.
Or put colorful tape on it or a fluorescent tag or some other identifying marker. Our baggage is always garish but hard to sneak off with!
