I am selling two tickets to the beer festival this weekend. Face value plus surcharge, $43.50/ticket. I can email or meet in Decatur to exchange.

Piggybacking on the above comment. I’ve also got a spare ticket. Same price – $40 face value + $3.50 surcharge from TicketAlternative for a total of $43.50.

Texted you but haven’t seen a response from you yet. Ticket goes back up for sale at 4 p.m. if I haven’t heard back by then.

No response from TJ so ticket is still for sale.

As is stated on the non-existent DM rules and regulations page:

“All recipients of Decatur Beer Festival tickets obtained through Decatur Metro must commit time at the start of the festival to supplying DM with the highest gravity, most expensive beers available. After DM passes out, you are free to enjoy the festival.”

That means you J_T! Limber up!

Anybody else underwhelmed by the beer selection at the festival tomorrow? No international beers. And no Rogue :(

      • Keith F says:
        October 14, 2011 at 9:32 am

Not me. I’m HAPPY and ready to get happier tomorrow. I kind of appreciate the Made in the USA aspect of this festival (even though one of our Canada friends is also joining the party).

      • Geoff says:
        October 14, 2011 at 9:43 am

Seriously JM? You trying to pooh pooh what stands to be the most glorious day of the year because 40(?) craft brewers are coming to town and you’re still not satisfied. Did you complain when Stephen King wasn’t on the Book Festival line up? Pooh pooh on you. The region’s beer spotlight is on us. The festival is well-organized, well-promoted, and is something we can all be proud of. They give $1000s of dollars of proceeds to charities. If the organizers of this event are reading – thank you for doing a great job and bringing this awesome event so close to my house that I can webble wobble home. Can’t wait.

        MADE IN THE USA!

      • chris says:
        October 14, 2011 at 10:02 am

I find most of Rogue’s beers overrated and significantly overpriced. Also, the festival’s featuring a few renowned Canadian breweries, so it does have a bit of international flair.

      • Darenw says:
        October 14, 2011 at 1:44 pm

With more and more beer options coming on line every day, something like the beer festival has to choose a focus to be able to make any kind of intelligent decisions. American made seems like a great one.
And if you love Rogue, buy a six pack. The beer TASTING festival is to find new favs.

Made my first run through the Harbour Bar this week with the family. Overall, an enjoyable experience. A few items were really good, notably, the gumbo and everything we ate that was fried (shrimp, calamari, fries). Also of note, good kids not necessarily healthy choices on the menu($4.99 for a kids selection – does not include drink). One of my sons had a pretty serious cheesburger. I had the grilled fish tacos and found them to be average, but I eat a lot of fish tacos. Also not to impressed with the red and blue tortilla chips as a side. Saw some of the steamed dishes come by my table and a felt remiss for not ordering as they looked really good. Laslty, the set up is great. They did an awesome job with the remodel and the outside area is impressive. Tow bars, one inside and one out back. Two large boche courts up front, picnic tables and cornhole in the back. Great for the kids to run around, and great for your adult friends post 9 I am thinking. At any rate, using the Kessler system, its a worthy addition to the neighborhood.

HUGE neighborhood yard sale on Saturday in Kirkwood (some Edgewood and East Lake homes too). Saturday from 8-2pm. There will be signs placed all over the neighborhood to direct you to all participating homes. I read there are 39 homes in the yard sale! I know it is not Decatur but it’s so close!!!

Is there an online place where I can figure out when and where all the festivals, events, etc? for instance – the fernbank festival is going on along with that mini event held at that church (rides, mini carnival) this weekend. But I wouldnt have known without digging. I also heard there is something going on in avondale? Anyway, if there is a site that houses when these events happen – Please someone let me know. Thanks!

Everyone needs a good laugh. I found one the other day that’s kept me laughing. How simple, yet genius, things can turn around my week.

Michael Buble, Obama, and Bachmann videos from Bad Lip Reading on youtube (not really for the kiddos).

I feel pretty good about the beer fest selection considering the U.S. has spearheaded the craft beer explosion over the past 10 years. Although there are some great Belgian and other European beers, most international brews fall into that boring watered down lager/pilsner category they’ve been making forever

      • JM says:
        October 14, 2011 at 9:33 am

I think we make the best beers in the world (for my taste), but the festival is advertised as including international selections. There are none to be found on the map, as far as I can see. I wouldn’t have minded trying some random European beers that I’d never heard of.

Yesterday, I noticed a DM post from Monday that had received almost 100 comments. This piqued my interest and I decided to check out the conversation. A handful of you spent several days debating what topics we should and should not discuss on the DM blog. I hadn’t heard about the particular story many of you demanded we not talk about. However, I quickly figured out all the details thanks to your banter!

Some of you deserve a BIG Thank You for the publicity you gave the story you so desperately wanted to go away. I’m sure your neighbor appreciates it also! [snark]

      Elizabeth

      • Guess My Other Alias says:
        October 14, 2011 at 10:00 am

When your neighbors are already talking about it and your little girl comes home crying because kids are teasing her about it, I think you piling on is the least of their worries. But I do hope it made your day and perhaps made you feel a little better about yourself.

        • Elizabeth says:
          October 14, 2011 at 10:03 am

I wasn’t piling on but rather pointing out, in a clever way you didn’t pick up on, that the people who wanted the story to go away only brought more attention to it. I didn’t know a thing about it and never would have without everyone demanding nobody talk about it.

          • Keith F says:
            October 14, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Generally I find that when I have to point out I was being clever…I wasn’t.

        • Elizabeth says:
          October 14, 2011 at 10:05 am

Oh geez. I wasn’t piling on but rather pointing out, in a clever way you didn’t pick up on, that the people who wanted the story to go away only brought more attention to it. I didn’t know a thing about it and never would have without everyone demanding nobody talk about it.

Good tactic there. Keep repeating yourself and maybe my slow little brain will pick up on what you are putting down! Believe it or not, I got your point. And my point was that the damage was already done. I guess I need to add a [snark], or at least a ;-) to alert you when I’m throwing it right back at ya…

            “in a clever way”

            Clever is certainly a stretch.
            http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/clever

And it’s interesting that it’s only a page over, and instead of posting your comment there where it would have been relevant and at least appeared that you had some legitimate interest, you posted it here. Which only leads us to conclude that you have no general interest in discussing community values, and were merely stirring the pot. Try not to make it so glaringly obvious next time.

            • Elizabeth says:
              October 14, 2011 at 3:56 pm

You are correct. I didn’t have an interest in the topic. I wasn’t trying to stir the pot up on FFFA about that topic but to only point out that those trying to help made it worse. Funny how that often happens. Might best for some to let things be next time. . .lessons learned all around.

I have to disagree. It spawned an excellent discussion about what we all feel comfortable with and find acceptable when it comes to our local boards. It absolutely was a conversation worth having.I’m still not sure why you chose to post your comment about it on this board, and not that one though.

          • RScott says:
            October 14, 2011 at 10:33 am

Yeah, things like cleverness, wit, and sarcasm don’t come through well in text. Usually just makes the sender look arrogant (not talking about you, just in general). Trust me, I’ve made that mistake many times so I ain’t hypocratizing. I you want to avoid fights on this blog? Better edit and read your post aloud before you send.

            • RScott says:
              October 14, 2011 at 1:00 pm

One thing I find fascinating about the community of regular posters here is the way individuals tend to take on particular roles/functions, kind of like in a family. If you’ve decided to take on the job of waiting ’til a discussion has wound down and then judging the rest of us, you are certainly free to give it a whirl. You should know, however, that the cleverness bar is set pretty high around here.

            • Elizabeth says:
              October 14, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I read this board every week and have been posting on message boards for a decade. I love the banter of message boards and I certainly understand the “hazing” process that regulars put newbies through. All is fair in the pecking order.

american beers crafted in an international style, maybe? Yeah, it would have been cool to see some totally random European beers but I think there will be more great beers than we can ever taste as is. Keep in mind each vendor will likely have multiple beers on tap. Hmmm… how much am I actually drinking if I take 100 tastings? Scary thought.

Creative Loafing, online and hard copy, is a good resource for festivals and other happenings around town.

Refer to the “Guitar Red Addendum” which states “Regardless of any ordinance to the contrary, street musicians will be tolerated so long as they are of good humor, chat with the Mayor whenever he walks by, and keep their level of intoxication to a tolerable standard.”

        http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=12110&stateId=10&stateName=Georgia

But my real response is, to heck with ordinances. Go for it. My kids, and me, love our local Miles Davis that sits in the front of the courthouse some mornings. The sound echos around the block. Fantastic.

Make your plans for next Saturday and help Turn DecatuRED for 50 Cents Period, a new Decatur-based not-for- profit that helps provide girls in India and Nepal with an uninterrupted education by supplying sanitary products and facilities including clean water systems. In many parts of the world, girls miss a week of school each month for lack of the roughly 50 cents it costs to buy sanitary supplies. Who knew? We have already provided clean water for the first time ever to to two Indian schools and are currently providing product to 390 girls, with others waiting. We also work with World Relief to provide product to local refugee women and girls. Next Saturday, nearly 40 Decatur businesses are joining together to support and raise $ for this organization. Eat, drink and shop in Decatur and help a great cause! For specifics on what businesses are doing and more information on the organization, visit http://www.50CentsPeriod.org. This really is unprecedented– never have so many businesses here joined in an event to raise money for a charity. I love this town!

OK, so someone had to make an iPhone comment on 4S launch day. I’m finally planning to get an iPhone, but now have to decide between AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon.

I’ve narrowed my choice to AT&T or Verizon, and as I gather many DM readers have iPhones I wondered if anyone could help me out with call quality experience around Decatur/Atlanta on either carrier. I have AT&T now and call quality is highly unimpressive, but to be fair my phone is about 3 years old, so the phone could be half the problem. Actually, I say iPhone users, but any AT&T vs. Sprint observations would be appreciated.

I have a new phone with AT&T and a new phone with Verizon (one for work, one for personal). Coverage on the AT&T model is horrid. There are dead zones all over Decatur and ATL, and my calls drop for no apparent reason. I honestly can’t recall ever having a dropped call with Verizon, but there are some places on Ponce in particular where it doesn’t work. All in, I would go Verizon with zero hesitation.

Occasionally I experience a lag of up to 12 hours receiving a voice mail message (AT&T service, 5-month old Android phone). Occasionally a v-mail message appears and the phone has not rung at all (even though it claims to be at full signal strength). AT&T customer service is mediocre at best, and sometimes laughably poor. (No other mobile carrier provides a reliable signal at my house, otherwise I would have switched years ago.)

Then you’ll probably also think it’s entertaining that I’ve recently experienced delays in receiving landline vmails and also email messages. Being self-employed and heavily dependent on technology to stay connected with clients and prospects, I find it all to be hilarious.

The humor is that you don’t like your crappy service that provides coverage and you would like to change to another carrier that has better customer service but crappy coverage, or in your case, no coverage. You don’t see the humor or am I misinterpreting you “WTF?”?

well, no, I don’t see the humor and probably over-reacted a little bit. Not to be too much of downer on a beautiful Friday, but….unreliable message service can potentially undermine my livelihood. Unlikely to lose a whole project, but makes it difficult to stay in touch with and ahead of my clients and prospects and their expectations. Any independent contractor of professional services will tell you that sucks. I’m completely dependent on mobile phone service, only one provider meets the most important criterion (reliable signal at my house/office) and they fall short on most everything else. So I send them a chunk of $$ every month and put up with what I consider unacceptable quality of service. The only way out is to sell my house and move. (Or, if I could just remember to buy a danged Lotto ticket, maybe I could escape all of it, including the need to work for a living!)

Try Google Voice. You get a phone number for free, you can use it to capture all your voicemails. It can ring on any phones you have. You can tailor messages to specific numbers. You can check all your messages on your phone or on line. I love the way I have mine set up.

Does it push your messages out to your phone? If not, does it push notification of waiting messages out to you? Or do you have to go check? (not a deal breaker) Can you set up multiple numbers, e.g., cell phone, landline #1, landline #2 with different greetings? Do all the messages land in the same mailbox or in different mailboxes that I can check with a single login?

It can push out a text and/or email notification. It also attempts to translate messages into text if you like. This feature is frequently worthless and as often hilarious. During one morning commute my wife was ahead of me and called to let me now the the “little red x’s above the reversible lane on Dekalb Ave. were not working.” Well, the translation said something about little red Texaco Hats and that’s what we’ve called them ever since.

Love using my Google number on my iPhone. I don’t even know how to retrieve a regular voice mail. When I have no cell service or can’t answer a ring, the message is forwarded to the Google number which then sends me both texts and an email of the message. Although the written text & email are sketchy/funny on accuracy (aka Texaco Hats), I still get a true recording of the message as a link in my email. I use Gmail but don’t think that’s required for the Google number.

As far as service – I switched to AT&T about 2 years ago because Verizon could not provide reliable service in my home which is also my work location. They did “engineering” studies and even called ME back with the results only to admit they needed another tower near me and had no ETA on construction of one. I live in the SW corner of Decatur.

will definitely look into using a google phone number.
you got more response from Verizon than I ever did from Sprint re. crummy signal at my house — all I got was “sorry, no can do” which was about on par with the rest of their customer support.

General consensus is the Verizon has better coverage (regardless of the phone used) but I’ve had very few problems with AT&T coverage (notable exception – LAX airport – seriously, what’s up with that AT&T?). Even in the boonies of Eastern Montana, I’ve been able to get a decent signal with AT&T.

Can’t speak to Verizon’s customer service, but the reason I’m on AT&T now (and have been since back in the days when they really WERE AT&T and not just a renamed SBC/Cingular) is because Sprint’s customer service was AWFUL. Like Comcast levels of awfulness. Not that AT&T customer service is great, but Sprint managed to set the bar really, really low.

If you’re interested in using your iPhone overseas with prepaid micro SIM cards, you may want to talk to both AT&T and Verizon to get their official stance. Word is that Verizon will allow you to have the SIM card slot on their iPhone 4S unlocked after 60 days of being a customer in “good standing.” AT&T has thus far refused to unlock their iPhones for any reason and if you want to use your iPhone, you’ll have to pay exorbitant roaming rates. This will NOT work with a Verizon iPhone 4 – only the 4S. The Verizon iPhone 4 is CDMA only and does not have a SIM card slot.

Having experienced a few different carriers in Decatur, I’ve concluded that coverage is just generally poor here. I assume it is because there are not enough towers. Then again, the nation as a whole has pretty crappy coverage compared to most of the developed world, so I guess it’s all relative.

I am sort of happy with Verizon. I say sort of because the service is fine, and the customer service folks are quick and friendly, but not happy with the bill. I’m pushing around $100 and I don’t have unlimited anything. And when I called recently to see if I could downgrade anything, including my data plan, the woman told me I was lucky because new customers pay more for the amount of data I use (which is not much.) My phones have broken a few times here and there, and they replace them for free which is nice, but both times they gave me a refurbished phone, and they both broke. My contract is up in Jan. and I’m thinking about looking for something more affordable, but at the moment I qualify for a free phone upgrade, and if I get a shiny new phone, it locks me into a new contract. What to do…

I hadn’t really considered that, but perhaps I will. And an update on my new service quest: I stopped in Metro PCS Fri. and to get the fastest web access, you have to buy a close to $400 phone right of the bat. It sounded like if you buy the cheaper phones you’re on one network, and the more expensive one, you’re on a another. I understand a nicer phone will be faster, but to be on 2 different systems, sounds weird. Maybe I misunderstood, but that’s not going to be new carrier whatever the case may be.

This is what we did. We have phones/plans from Straight Talk. You can buy them online or at WalMart. $45 per month for unlimited talk, text, and internet. And the phone was under $100. No extra data fees. Can’t beat it.

Now I readily admit that the internet access on the phone is far from all the bells and whistles. It’s not a smart phone. You can’t download apps to it. You can’t use the phone to stream videos or anything fancy. But when I need to check my email in a pinch or log onto news sites or facebook while I’m killing time at the airport, it works just fine for me.

Biggest plus for me — it’s on the Verizon network. Make sure you check the phone you buy. The back of the package should say “V” for Verizon. If you want AT&T, look for the “A” on the package.

I recently moved to Decatur from out of state. I had no issues with AT&T where I was, so I was really shocked to find out the 3G coverage around Atlanta is terrible. I get the dreaded “E” all the time. I would switch to Verizon, but I have unlimited data and am not willing to give that up. The sprint coverage at my house is very weak, so I guess I am stuck with AT&T.

      • Gladys says:
        October 14, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Until fairly recently, we had been happy with AT&T for over ten years. Now calls do not go through, one party can’t hear the other, call quality has deteriorated, calls are dropped and I get missed calls or messages when the phone has not rung. These problems happen when I am at home, and with family members on our plan, so the phone is not moving from tower to tower and it’s all AT&T. When there was no cell coverage on a recent Sunday night I called from our landline and was told three nearby towers were experiencing problems, but they were working on it. I had attributed our problems to old phones, but with new phones it is no better, and perhaps worse; and now we’re back in a two year contract – unless I get CREDO to buy us out. Good luck!

205 EAST PONCE DE LEON AVENUE – DECATUR, GA 30030

        Food Service Inspection Report
        Date: 09/29/2011 Score: 77

I think that Decatur should do more to embrace sustainable transportation. Cars and even Marta are not good for the earth as they use fossil fuels. I think we should be doing more to promote equine transportation. We should have dedicated equine lanes, equine fueling stations, disposal areas to place the equine products of combustion, and equine friendly health regulations that would allow me to enter a bar with my mode of transportation and share a beer with it. Plus, I wouldn’t need a lawn mower anymore. Let me see a bike that can keep my lawn mowed.

Except that the city could collect it and either sell it as premium, locally-sourced, all natural fertilizer, or dry it out and burn it in a bio-mass power plant in town. It would be a cogen plant, thus it would power the town and the leftover heat from the power plant would provide heating to the downtown district.

The only reason you don’t see much use of equine transportation now is that we’ve invested no money in equine infrastructure. If we invested some funds — I don’t know, say $900 trillion dollars, financed through a temprary tax on breathing — in equine lanes, people would finally get out of their cars, the ozone layer would triple in thickkness, and the climate would cool to a comfy, year-round 72 degrees.

Does anyone know where this army of Red Cross volunteers came from? Some days I don’t see any of them, other days Decatur seems to be overrun with them.

They are unnecessarily aggressive and even though I have listened to their talk once when they convinced a friend to donate, they will not leave me alone. The Red Cross does good work but these methods are harming their public image.

        • Parker Cross says:
          October 14, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Are they aggressive? None have approached me. Maybe I’ve mastered the “cold and unapproachable” look. Or more likely the “crazy street person” look. There are just so many of them. What’s with that?
Are they volunteers or employees? Anyone know?

There was a pair last week in front of Leon’s. Kind of a good volunteer-bad volunteer bit. One stood there enjoying the birds of the air and lillies of the field. And the other one wanted to, well…swallow my soul!

      • Ellen says:
        October 14, 2011 at 5:02 pm

As a small business owner in Decatur, I have had many opportunities to observe quite aggressive behavior from them as they apply pressure to people on the street to give ongoing support to the Red Cross. They are unwilling to give out informational material and are hard-pressed to take no for an answer. In fact, one day I heard one worn down passerby beg to be released so he could meet his family for lunch. It concerns me because I have seen shoppers cross the street to avoid a Red Crosser who is standing in front of my store. Is there anything that can be done about this?

        • Dave says:
          October 14, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Not only are they obnoxious, these folks don’t even work for the Red Cross. Instead (according to one individual who I questioned), they are employed by a for-profit company contracted to solicit for the Red Cross. I haven’t seen them today. Maybe they don’t work on Fridays.

But it seems the friend who was going to use the second one won’t be able to make it. I’m sure it won’t be a problem to sell it tomorrow morning but I figured I’d give anyone here looking at the last minute first dibs at it. Reply here or email DM and he can forward you my email address and/or phone number if you’re interested.

Lyrics Only Guy/ Decatur’s Token Republican-

I miss you as Decatur’s Token Republican most of all. Your absence is deeply felt because you add such humor, wisdom, and good spirit to the group. I sincerely apologize if my offered two cents awhile back led to your decision to lurk. ( I’ve been acutely aware of your pulling back since then, but didn’t know how to go about reaching out.) You’ve taught me so much through your comments on here, and I’d hate it if my clunkily worded thoughts made participating less fun for you. I truly hope you’ll catch your second wind soon and bring your brilliance back to the board. There’s a gap now in every discussion — and only you can fill it.

          • Decatur's Token Republican says:
            October 17, 2011 at 11:15 am

What a nice response, Deanne, thank you so much. And you are definitely NOT the reason. I always appreciate the back and forth with most on here, even when we agree to disagree.

I’m no longer commenting (after this one, of course :-) ) because, to be honest, with the maturity of this blog (and congratulations to DM for its success), the asshat quotient has increased to an intolerable level. So many of the vets (including, but not limited to, STG, Cuba, Karass, you, Scott, Steve, DEM, Parker etc.) are seemingly fighting against a rising tide of ajc-like commentary. Too many times, commenters are making statements just to wound, rather than carrying on a civil, open-minded conversation. An inevitable consequence as more discover the blog, I assume, but not something I want to continue to be a part of.

But I will continue reading everyone’s commentary, and appreciating people like you and the others I mentioned for your dedication to civil discourse.

            Sincerely,
            Token

              Not pleased.
Keep in mind your choice does not have to be irrevocable, Tokin’. Real life pulls me away from this blog, usually in the summer, often over the Christmas season. Then I come back refreshed.
As with any relationship, sometimes you need a break.
              We’ll miss you.

On the off-chance that this has anything to do with a statement I made a while back – which was one of the last you responded to – then let’s discuss it off-line because I think it may have been taken as a joke at your expense, and it wasn’t. It was an actual issue I was having with the site. If not, and it’s just the haters, I totally understand. TRUST me.

I’ve been missing you, too, DTR, and hoping you were on some kind of hiatus and not permanently stepping away. Must say, your observation about the shifting mix around here reassures me that it’s not been a figment of my imagination. As is the case with any human system/community that succeeds enough to attract new visitors/occupants, the core values here will be tested. If a critical mass of citizen-leaders perseveres, then the inevitable changes will represent positive evolution instead of devolution. You’ve been a pillar in this community, so I hope you’ll stick around. But no pressure!

              Anyhow, don’t be a stranger!

BTW, there’s a dissertation in here somewhere, about the ecology and ethnology of community-based blogs. Wish I could spend the day hammering out the thesis, instead of what I’m paid to do!

With much talk about attempted break-ins at houses in the Clairemont Great Lakes neighborhood, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about an incident that happened to me yesterday. At about 7:30, a white male, about 5’10″, very respectable and, dare I say good looking even, approached our front door and attempted to open it. He got through the unlocked screen door but the dead bolt on the front door stopped him. Undeterred by the hungry and barking dogs, he tried the back door as well. At this point, he got more resourceful. Apparently he emptied the contents of our recycling bin all over the back porch and then used that to boost himself up to window level of the guest bedroom, broke the screen off its track and climbed through the otherwise open window.
Fortunately, nobody called the police. My head still aching from beer in the sun and my arm bruised and throbbing from the first failed attempt to climb up to the bedroom window, I’m left wondering what part of “I’m taking the front screen door key, do NOT lock the deadbolt” when you leave for the Auburn game she did not understand!

Other than that, awesome Beer Festival!
