Crime and Capture in Decatur
Decatur Metro | April 2, 2011In the past 36 hours, Patch has posted three separate pieces on crime and suspects apprehended in the Decatur zip.
- Woman Narrowly Escapes Attempted Carjacking in Decatur – Woman from Cobb County reports to Decatur PD that she was stopped on Kirk Road a little after midnight on March 31st by two men, one armed. She told police she escaped by driving southbound on Columbia.
- Crime Blotter: 30030 Decatur Burglaries On Rise – This is actually a post mainly about recent burglaries at the Archstone Apartments just outside the Decatur city limits on DeKalb Industrial Way. In terms of “burglaries on the rise in 30030″, there’s no real info on that in the actual article. But a check of Crimereports.com shows 48 “incidents” in the past 30 days compared to 37 “incidents” in the 30 days prior. However, it is getting warmer out and so part of that increase is possibly seasonal.
- Suspect Nabbed in Overnight Burglary; May Be Connected to Others – Good police work and community meetings result in the capture and arrest of a South Decatur home burglary suspect.
And just to provide a bit of balance to this crime-heavy news – hundreds of random (and no so random) acts of kindness went unreported to anyone else, let alone the police.

DM, you are really good at tempering the glaring headline to reflect the real story. So many “others” just post and let the sensationalism run a muck. Thank you.
Sure thing. But I can’t say I was always so sensitive to it. However, I began to notice that people got a little more than freaked out whenever we reported a good number of crime stories in relation to other posts. And while part of the fear factor can certainly can be higher crime rates, I recently read a couple studies that confirmed my suspicion that people’s perception of crime isn’t at all correlated to the actual crime levels, but to how much its covered by news/info sources.
But crime “sells”, so most news orgs overlook this.
I love crimereports.com
DPD has always done an outstanding job IMO.
DPD has always been fast, nice and patient until the new motorcycle cop in town. Watch out for him no human compassion at all!
Thank you Decatur police- so appreciative of your hard work.
Decatur Police are worth every penny. Too bad there police station is a rundown school. They deserve so much better. I went pick up a report the other day and couldn’t get over the horrible conditions they have. Glad the city wasted all that money on the bike lanes that no one use and rebuilding the Allen WIlson Apartments. Thanks for keeping us safe DPD.
Agree on the need for a new PD. There was a process last fall to provide community input on such a facility and a very nice conceptual design came out of it. Look at it here: http://www.decaturmetro.com/2010/09/22/the-proposed-redevelopment-of-beacon-hill/ Like everything else, the problem is $$. Would you be willing to pay for a tax increase to build it?
The “wasted money” you refer to is a) not considered to be wasted by those who use the facilities (like the bike riders I saw this morning) and b) couldn’t have been used for purposes other than what it was used for.
Ahh, Steve. Have some compassion. Don’t go stealing someone’s unfounded outrage. (And, by the way, I agree that our PD needs better digs and, amidst the sources of funding that could actually be used to do something about it, I support that it be prioritized. Crime and schools. As a homeowner, their performance puts equity in my wallet.)
I’ve think that the current police building should be condemned: I overheard one of the city employees talking about the rats and cockroaches in there – quite an image we’re setting for the rest of the state with our high-class police digs!
