A 1919 Blueprint of Winnona Park

Decatur Metro | February 15, 2011

Tom sends in this interesting blueprint of the first phase of Winnona Park from 1919.  Those are alleys running east-west, correct?

Interesting. Those do look like alleys. And what is/was that school at the top? Is that now the Rec? I know there was talk here about schools from long ago, but I all I can recall is that someone was describing Ebster Gym as a school once upon a time.

If that’s at the corner of Barry St and Ponce de Leon, that is the current site of the Glenwood School today. Not sure if the current building was standing in 1919 or not.

oh. right. Shoulda realized that. Guess I was hoping for a newly rediscovered relic with all these cool recent finds on this site. :p

It is really neat to compare this to google maps of the same area. The lots really match up.

Interesting. Unless I’m mistaken, it looks like there’s a street car line running right through Agnes Scott campus.

You’re right, except the campus at that time did not extend south of Ansley St, which was through to Candler at that time. Ansley was covered up when the campus was extended to Dougherty and below. If you look carefully today, you can still see where the streetcar line came from Oakview to E. Davis. Then it went right through the middle of what is now the athletic field.

I’m curious about the Baptist church located at the corner of Trinity and Church. And I notice that the blueprint shows lots where Winnona Park Elementary is now located. It also does look like a street car line comes down South Candler, turns right onto what looks like Ansley Street and then heads south again on an unnamed street. The blueprint also is originally dated June 1914 and revised July 1919. Fascinating.

The streetcar line did not run on a street from Ansley south until it curved around and got to Oakview – it ran on its own right-of-way.

The Trinity Building is what remains of the Baptist church that was at the corner of Church and E Trinity.

You will also notice there was an Episcopal church roughly on the site of the present Philips Towers.

Thanks for all the info. Decatur seems to be like the rest of Atlanta in that it’s been constantly changing, tearing down and rebuilding.

Notice how it almost looks like cul de sacs? Isolated from any main roads, and with only one real exit (Winona Drive) to a street. Almost like they expected commercial to develop along Candler, rather than Agnes Scott.

I know this thread is old, but an elderly long-time resident of Winnona Park mentioned to me that a swimming pool was once located on Avery Street not far from College. She indicated that it was in-filled in the ’60s or ’70s. Anyone heard anything like this? Just curious.

It used to be the Decatur Country Club. The tennis courts were in the Breens back yard at 357 Winnona. I think the “clubhouse” was the fourth or fifth house north of Winnona on Avery. If you want the whole story, talk to Bill Breen.
