Decatur Residents Give City TAD Option
Decatur Metro | November 3, 2010According to the AJC’s DeKalb Election Results, 68% of Decatur residents voted in favor of giving the city the power to create Tax Allocation Districts.
OK, so now that we’ve approved the measure, where do we start?! ![]()

My house! Plenty of shovel ready projects around here!
Proudly moderated since 2009!
My area….East Decatur Station/Columbia Park/Avondale Station. Also, since the Clifton Corridor might connect to Avondale Station, then redevelopment in this area seems like a no-brainer.
Last night I took an informal survey of the political science faculty at Emory. I sent them the ballot measure and asked to take their best educated guess as to what they thought they would be voting on. I got eight responses and no one had a clue what powers were being sought. I wonder what 68% of the voters thought they were approving.
I’m guessing this makes redevelopment in a way that is financially accretive to the City and CSD more difficult. Signs of desperation like this are short sighted. So I’d start by keeping mum about it and concentrate on making the city more attractive to investors.
I’m with you Judd, but I’m more concerned with what it is that the commissioners think was approved. My guess is that it is nothing like what the voters were thinking about.
Common Cause Georgia has been in the forefront of efforts to make voters aware that there are good uses and bad uses of TAD money. It will now require some citizen watchdogging to ensure that projects which allow diversion of property taxes are truly good investments for the community. Bill Bozarth, Excecutive Director, CCGA.
