Cakes & Ale – Top CL Restaurant of 2008

    Decatur Metro | December 30, 2008 | 9:26 am

Andisheh points out that Besha Rodell over at his old employer has ranked Cakes and Ale as her #5 pick of top Atlanta-area restaurants of 2008.

The much baleyhooed Holeman and Fitch gastropub in Buckhead was #1.

Nice restaurant and good food. a bit pricey, though. My biggest complaint is their extremely high draft beer prices. $6 for a gaelic ale that you can get 20 steps away at Brickstore, Taco mac, or The Grange. I know you are paying for a bit of ambiance and that’s where a lot of the restaurant profits are but, that’s pushing it a bit.

Cakes & Ale is the best thing to hit Decatur’s restaurant scene in a long time. The food and the whole approach the restaurant takes are unique, inventive, and forward thinking. And a word about price. If you have not been, the prices are absolutely fair, maybe even more than so, for what you are served, and in fact are comparable to any number of places in Decatur, such as Cafe Lily, Watershed, and feast. So, give it a try.

I am with Alan on this. Isn’t that what they charge at the pub?

And I agree….they could charge more.

CB – The name Cakes & Ale must have you thinking it is a pub. Cakes & Ale in a fine dining restaurant like Cafe Lily , Watershed, Feast, etc. No way it should be compared with The Grange, The Brick Store and Taco Mac. Different types of establishments aiming to provide totally different dining experiences.

Fair enough. I’ve been and i’m a patron. I’m just making an observation about one aspect of the restaurant. And, i’ve been to Feast, Cafe Lily, Watershed, and just about every other restaurant in Decatur – including the recently opened Parkers on Ponce. But, I still hold to my point that the beer prices are too high. Beer is beer and it doesn’t change from restaurant to restaurant. Not so with food – I think C&A has a unique and distinct menu. Just my two cents. (BTW, as a case in point, Gaelic is $4.25 at the grange and typically $4.50 at the brickstore when they have it).
