New Yorkers Love Moving to Atlanta, But Can't Stop Whining
Decatur Metro | July 16, 2008If you love/hate hearing transplants complain about living in Atlanta, do yourself a favor and read this great find from Fresh Loaf: a New York Sun article about New Yorkers that move here in record numbers and then morn the loss of bagels and pizza.
I submit Rosa’s on Broad Street for a good NY slice (not to mention the atmosphere). But when it comes to bagels, I too, am at a loss.
I agree that Rosa’s is the closest to NYC pizza and I enjoy it but it just isn’t the same. . . . The first thing I get when I go to NYC is a slice from Joe’s. And we’ll never have good bagels here–it’s the NY water!
I had the “pleasure” of living in NJ/NY for a couple of years and one of the few things I enjoyed was the bagels.
I haven’t had anything down here that is the same as the bagels in the tri-state area but I think everyone should try Belly in Virginia-Highlands. Their sea salt bagels are better than any other bagel I have had (IMHO). Keep in mind I am not saying they are the same as NJ/NY bagels. These are very different but very good.

I recommend the Eli Zabar Gift Basket for any transplant- they will love and you can find it here: http://www.someonespoilme.com/tips/party/eli-zabar-read-our-minds/
Check out a cool website I’ve happened on, sound archive number three in particular. It appears that a group of fellow travelers from the Big Apple smoothed the way for a lot of us way back in the 1980′s.
I was the one featured in that article who complained about the pizza. The pizza here does suck, but if it was that important to me I never would have moved. Reporters have a funny way of shining the spotlight on things that are said in passing.
Interesting that when I lived in suburban Philadelphia, which certainly has its share of ethnic Italians, the best advice my wife’s Italian hairdresser could give her about where to find good pizza was Pizza Hut. I did have a good source for stromboli, however, and the cheese steaks were the best.
