Zebra Turns Up in Emory-Oxford Campus Building

    Decatur Metro | April 23, 2008 | 1:16 pm

The AJC reports that someone put a zebra on the 3rd floor of Seney Hall on Emory’s Oxford campus last night.

The story front and center on its homepage – as of noon today.  (Seriously?  The AJC?  Isn’t this story more along the lines of say…a crummy blog?  It’s no wonder I read the NY Times first every morning.)

BTW…Call me old-fashioned (or maybe just sober) but causing an animal undue stress for a pointless campus prank isn’t funny.

    Elizabeth Wilson's Impact on Decatur

    Decatur Metro | April 22, 2008 | 5:09 pm

Next month, former Decatur mayor Elizabeth Wilson will receive an honorary doctorate from Agnes Scott.  In honor, Decatur eLife magazine has produced a three part series telling her story.

Watch Part 1 of 3 below and hear how Wilson was one of the first African-American women to get a library card in DeKalb County.

Make sure to check out Part 2, which comes out on the eLife website tomorrow.

h/t: Bill Floyd Decatur (who incidentally opens the piece)

    Decatur Losing Julie's Cafe

    Decatur Metro | April 20, 2008 | 7:04 pm

Scott writes in that Julie’s Cafe, the little hole in the wall around the corner from the Masonic Temple building, is closing.

According to Scott, Julie said the restaurant was too much work to keep going. I’m sure that the current economic climate isn’t helping either. I can’t say I’ve ever eaten at Julie’s, but Scott morns the loss of this “Jamaican Jewel”. CL seemed to like it.

One additional note: Scott reports that the Probation Office in the same strip as Wahoo! and Ink & Dagger Tattoo Parlour has put up a “For Lease” sign.

We’ll all have to keep an eye out to see what takes the place of these two establishments!

    Thanks for the updates Scott!

I Can't Freakin' Park in the CVS Plaza Anymore!

    Decatur Metro | April 19, 2008 | 10:11 pm

For the past few weeks its been damn near impossible to find a open parking spot in the CVS plaza, as nearly every space is taken on any given night.  Going to pick up a pizza from Mellow Mushroom has become an adventure it never was in the past. Taking those sharp corners and looking for a spot,  I now often park behind Mellow Mushroom if I’m lucky or (if I’m not) out by Decatur First Bank.

“What the heck is going on?!” I thought, dodging an oncoming minivan.

    And then it hit me.

It’s a result of JBL putting up those solar-powered parking meters in the 315 W. Ponce lot and threating people more publicly with fines and booting if they parked there.  So now, instead of paying to park at 315, all of the people that used to illegally park there have moved across Ponce Pl into the CVS plaza where its a lot more difficult to spot someone that is not frequenting the establishments in that plaza.

Well, I think it just plain stinks.  All of these empty parking lots and for one reason or another (be it location or price) everyone still parks on the street or at CVS.

We need viable alternatives!  My pizza is getting cold!

Decatur Couple Takes Marriage Crisis Public

    Decatur Metro | April 19, 2008 | 9:52 pm

My wife says she saw these odd yellow signs on Clairmont last week, but assumed it was a love-starved Emory student in the midst of a messy breakup. The AJC did a little digging and found a marriage in crisis and its most popular article of the day on AJC.com.

I’m with David on this one [who gets the hattip, while I’m phoning it in from a distant locale]. No clue what to make of it. She says she’s angry that he made their problems “public” with the signs, but then they both talk and pose for the AJC?

Oakhurst Green House In the Press Again

    Decatur Metro | April 16, 2008 | 12:41 pm

Why is it that every time I read an article about this house, I feel like someone is trying to sell me something?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of green construction (note that I’m not going off on a preservation rant about how the original bungalow was essentially destroyed), but the fact that this project is apparently co-funded by Discovery (UPDATE: not quite the way it works – see comments), on top of the fact that most of these “green” techniques used have been widely implemented around the U.S. for years (just ask my mom, step-father or that guy on HGTV), makes this project seem a little over publicized to me.

    Tax Day Traffic

    Decatur Metro | April 15, 2008 | 9:31 pm

Traffic was backed up Ponce from the Post Office all the way up to Commerce this evening, as last minute tax filers rushed to meet the deadline.

Just another reason to harbor resentment towards the Decatur Post Office!
