City Posts Annexation Map and Report
Decatur Metro | January 23, 2008As promised at last night’s meeting, the city of Decatur has posted its annexation report and map on their website.
Click here to read the full 6 page report.
Click here to view the map (pdf). The area under consideration for annexation is in the darker red, while the city of Avondale Estates is in blue. This map is much larger than the previous one found in the CDS report allowing for a close look at individual streets.
In a related matter (not really), is the city annexing land to the west, toward Kirkwood as well? One of those new monoliths is up at the intersection of Oakview and Hosea, which I’m pretty sure is a couple of blocks to the west of the Decatur/Atlanta line.
I would certainly like to see more westward expansion, at least consistently going to the R/R rather than stopping oddly at points like it does now on W Ponce (with the new welcome sign still being outside the proposed new City limits). I would particularly like to reconfigure the “punishment light” at that intersection which can make it feel like leaving the City should involve long suffering.
Hosea Williams and Oakview intersect in two places, both of which are in NPU-O in the City of Atlanta (which includes Edgewood, Kirkwood, and East Lake).
I agree that the city of Decatur city limits is pretty odd on the West Ponce side. It should extend atleast until Scott Blvd.
But don’t you find it funny that state and local leaders in Fulton couldn’t act fast enough to create mega cities with no holes or islands of unicorporated land, but over here in Dekalb many are so short sighted and selfish, that they don’t want to see the city grow because they may have to pay a few more dollars in taxes.
It really amazes me . I realize no one wants to be told they are coming into the city regardless of wether they want to or not, but the area as a hole needs to be considered sometime and it is not always right or practical to let ones personal choices rule the day! What if someone in the city of Decatur as it exist now wanted his land DE-annexed (yes it is a real term) because he didn’t agree with the politics or want to pay taxes to the city? I think we would all agree the city wouldn’t last long if that were to be allowed.
It would just be nice if the people of the Decatur/Avondale area would unite and build something.
It doesn’t have to be a mega-city like Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Etc., but dang it some times ya gotta sacrafice personal choice for the good of the whole.
I agree. The cooperation of those citizens in the North was something else!
I think some annexation of areas that are natural extentions of both Avondale and Decatur makes sense.
Pretty soon everything around is going to be in a city. I personally think cities are more responsive to a citizens needs.
You can actually get the Mayors of Decatur and Avondale and Clarkston on the phone …..try that with your Highness Vernon Jones!!!!!!!!
I think that if the cities really want to show they are independent they should depart from the retail alcohol example the county has set. You can NOT buy beer after midnight in Dekalb county or any of its cities except that portion of Atlanta in Dekalb. Just in case you think it is a Atlanta thing….Rockdale and Conyers allow 24 hour beer sales too! So does Madison, GA Greensboro, Ga Union Point, GA Eatonton, GA .. It is really weird that Dekalb and its cities have taken this route. So For starters Decatur, open up package sales 24 hours. I work from 4pm til midnight, and I don’t see why I am forced to drive to another jurisdiction to lawfully buy my beer. Before anyone starts raising kane, I just think it would be cool if the cities stopped walking lock step with the County on this issue. Prove your really about personal choice. Make the establishment pay a hefty license for this option and instruct the police to enforce any violations, but don’t think you have changed anything by making me or anyone drive to Atlanta and Rockdale to give them the tax dollars!
In conclusion Decatur and Avondale do not keep the same laws as Atlanta on Bars closing, (Nor does Dekalb County)
So, I think while we are discussing annexation we should also make living in the city different other than paying more taxes and the decal on the patrol car. I for one would like to buy package sales after midnight…. thanks for keeping and open mind!!!!!
P>S> I belive in law and order!
