Macy’s At North DeKalb Mall Is Closing

    Decatur Metro | December 4, 2015 | 10:45 am

    macysnorthdekalb

I have also heard rumblings of employees telling customers the store is closing as well over the last few days, but Tomorrow’s News Today has confirmed…

As I hinted at in October, the Macy’s at North DeKalb Mall will in fact be closing.  Store employees were informed November 30th that the store will close no later than January 30th, 2016.  Macy’s announced in September it planned to close as many as 40 locations nationwide by late January, but has yet to publicly identify the stores destined to close.
I placed calls to other Macy’s stores mentioned privately as possible closure targets, and each store associate I reached claimed their store had not been informed of any imminent closure.  The stores I contacted included those at Greenbriar Mall, South DeKalb Mall, Northlake Mall, Gwinnett Place Mall and The Mall at Stonecrest.
TNT also still stands by his prediction that Costco will take Macy’s place at the soon-to-be redeveloped, open-air concept North DeKalb Mall.

Is Costco Back On the Table At North DeKalb Mall?

    Decatur Metro | October 29, 2015 | 10:06 am

Tomorrow’s News Today is reporting that conditions may finally be right for Costco to execute on their 2008 plan to build a new intown location at North DeKalb Mall.

Nothing is set in stone at this point, but TNT lays out a variety of developments and details that make it seem like a revived North DeKalb Mall could transform to include a Costco in the coming years.

    Whatcha think?

North DeKalb Mall Sold, “Open-Air Concept” Planned

    Decatur Metro | May 16, 2014 | 9:15 am

Interesting.  From the Atlanta Business Chronicle…

Lennar Commercial Investors LLC teamed with Sterling Organization to buy North DeKalb Mall for an undisclosed sum.

The development team, which also includes Atlanta-based Hendon Properties, plans to convert the enclosed portion of the property to an open-air concept. Lennar and Sterling acquired ownership interest in the property and Sterling will manage the center. Timing on the redevelopment has not been set.

The Slow Revival of North DeKalb Mall?

    Decatur Metro | July 18, 2012 | 2:22 pm

    Tomorrow’s News Today reports…

Raleigh, North Carolina-based Golden Corral is coming to an outparcel of North DeKalb Mall. I’d love to say that after all this time that Costco, too , is opening, but alas, their plans remain tabled for the time being. Golden Corral will open in a portion of the parking lot directly behind the current free-standing Chick-fil-A and former Checkers restaurant, nearest to Macy’s. At times, the space has been used to stage a traveling amusement park.

But one buffet chain doesn’t a revival make.  However, TNT also notes that N. DeKalb Mall has also recently seen a Marshall’s and a Zaxby’s move in.  Additionally, there’s talk that a larger Chick-fil-A will soon be built nearby.  And as you just read above, according to TNT, the Costco plan isn’t totally dead, just “tabled” for the time being.

If the stars align, could North DeKalb Mall be poised for a comeback?

That Pottery Place Moving to North DeKalb Mall

    Decatur Metro | June 28, 2012 | 10:03 am

Bryan points out this note on “That Pottery Place’s” website about their coming move from Suburban Plaza to North DeKalb Mall…

Yes, the Wal-Mart cometh and we must goeth – but we aren’t going very far and we’re going to a fresher, larger studio to serve you better – and with longer and later opening hours!

We will stay open at Suburban Plaza through July 1st and then on July 2nd, we will reopen less than a mile away at the North DeKalb Mall in a lovely 2,800 square foot studio right on the mall food court, and just steps away from the rear entrance to the AMC movies and Applebee’s.

Marshalls Coming to North DeKalb Mall

    Decatur Metro | September 14, 2010 | 11:03 am

As warehouse store hipsters will surely note, it’s no long-defunct Costco, but Tomorrow’s News Today reports that Marshalls is opening a new store at North DeKalb Mall.

Just this week, I learned that Marshall’s would be opening in the one time Rhodes furniture store adjacent to the former Stein Mart and current AMC Theatres. The space was built for Rhodes in the early 2000s. When Rhodes filed for bankruptcy in 2004, and later closed all locations in 2005, the space reopened as Shoder Furniture (switching the location of the S and R from last to first.) That store later made way for K L Furniture, which closed as well. It’s hard to get excited about anything at this mall.

…Marshall’s should be open by late fall, as signage is already up and the building is already there.
