Palookaville Planning “Take Out Only” Location in Little 5 Points

    Decatur Metro | February 20, 2015 | 9:35 am

Avondale’s Palookaville looks to be expanding intown, recently sharing a smattering of demolition photos from “Natural Hair & Care Center” next to 7 Stages in Little 5 Points on Facebook.

The album is titled “Palookaville Junior” and includes the caption, “Where we take another hair salon and sell Corndogs and such out of it. Building the “Take Out Only” spot.”

In response to an inquiry about an opening date, the folks at Pallookaville responded, “It IS City of Atlanta. We have to do the real plans now that I have it gutted. We had no idea what was in the space because it had been built on so much over the years.”

There’s also a proposed floor plan pic, in case you’re into that sorta thing.

    Little 5 Points circa 1990

    Decatur Metro | July 2, 2011 | 1:01 pm

Always wondered what L5P looked and felt like back in its 1990s hey-day, but haven’t been able to get your hands on any plutonium for the Delorian?  Well, Youtube is the next best thing!

Little 5 Points’ “Wrecking Bar” Becoming a Bar

    Decatur Metro | September 7, 2010 | 10:38 am

Nothing like historic restoration and the promise of tasty beverages to catch my eye!

Creative Loafing’s Besha Rodell has a great piece in this week’s alt-weekly about the resurrection of “The Wrecking Bar”, the Beaux Arts Classical Revival-style mansion that’s been sitting vacant along Moreland Avenue at the edge of Little 5 Points, slowly being devoured by neglect since “The Wrecking Bar” antique store vacated the premises in 2005.

According to Rodell, the building is seeing new life thanks to Bob Sandage, who’s restoring the space and turning it into a brewpub and events facility.  (Don’t miss the photo tour! The brewpub will be set up in the basement)

The City of Atlanta’s website has a good history of this 110 year-old building, which is actually called the “Victor Hugo Kriegshaber House” after its original owner by historical types.  Here’s a blurb…

…the Kriegshaber house is one of the finest surviving examples of the great Victorian houses that have become increasingly rare in Atlanta. Often located along major thoroughfares, at least until the development of Ansley Park, Druid Hills, and Peachtree Heights Park in the early 1900s, these magnificent residences were built by the men who profited from the rise of the “New South” in the 1880s and ’90s, and then hired prominent architects to display their wealth in buildings. They have rapidly disappeared in the face of commercial development, urban renewal, and freeway construction. The Victor H. Kriegshaber house is an outstanding example of that type, significant for its original owner and for its architect, Willis F. Denny.

    Death in Little 5 Points?

    Decatur Metro | November 11, 2008 | 10:45 am

    Rusty Diamond writes in…

There is a white sheeted body on a bench in front of Corner Tavern in L5P.  Cops and ambulance are on Moreland and copter is flying overhead….

Chocolate Bar Chef to Open "Gastropub" in L5P

    Decatur Metro | August 3, 2008 | 11:26 am

InDecatur reported a while back that Nick Rutherford, chef at the critically-acclaimed Chocolate Bar, was leaving.

Well, a quote from the Inman Park newsletter over on AtlantaCuisine’s forums give us the tip-off as to where he’s going…

Molly Gunn and Nick Rutherford discussed their plans to open a restaurant called “Porter” in the former Bridgetown Grille/Grandma Luke’s location. The couple have lived in Inman Park for two years, and are long-time residents of Atlanta and have worked in many of the city’s finest restaurants. The restaurant will feature a beer bar with 20 on tap and 100 in bottles but the main focus is great food. Nick will be the chef (he is currently the chef at The Chocolate Bar in Decatur). They plan to open early September and have applied for their building permit. They will close Mon-Wed at 10:30 pm and Thurs-Sat at 2:30 am. They will serve brunch on the weekend. Their main focus is 80% food revenue…. they hope to attract other restaurant employees who are looking for a place to dine after their shift is over. Molly said if it ends up being mostly alcohol revenue late at night they will change their hours, because it will be a restaurant not a bar.

Molly and Nick’s new spot in the heart of L5P is called “The Porter” and though they’re not scheduled to open until next month, their menu is already online at their website.

Our loss is Little 5’s gain! Guess it would be been hard to open a similar concept here in Decatur, especially with the Brick’s similar future plans at the old Rue de Leon.

Best of luck to Nick and Molly.
