Decatur Makers finds a home, announces fundraising campaign

An unused church gym across from the Decatur post office will become the first home of Decatur Makers, a community-organized makerspace where adults and school-aged kids can invent and build.

Metro Atlanta’s first “family-friendly” makerspace, Decatur Makers has embarked on a campaign to raise funds and recruit volunteers to repair the gym, which is owned by First Christian Church of Decatur. The church has agreed to lease the 3,200-sq. ft. facility to Decatur Makers for five years in exchange for building improvements.

The fundraising campaign – facilitated through a fiscal sponsorship arrangement with the Decatur Education Foundation – will enable the all-volunteer Decatur Makers to replace parts of the roof, repair water damage and make other changes to prepare the building to be a makerspace. Tax-deductible gifts may be made securely online at DecaturEducationFoundation.org (with a reference to “Decatur Makers” in the form’s Comments box).

“The generosity of First Christian Church is turning an idea into a reality for the Decatur community,” says Lew Lefton, who chairs Decatur Makers. “If people in our community match that generosity in the form of financial gifts and volunteer hours, we can have the space open before the fall.”

Lefton added that a “Clean-Out-the-Space Day” has been scheduled this Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers of all skill sets may sign up to help at Volunteer Spot at http://vols.pt/AktJWv.

With a goal of $50,000, the fundraising campaign will support a long list of improvements needed for the space to be occupied, including new electrical wiring, drywall installation, roof repairs and plumbing. Lefton says the campaign has already reached 20 percent of its fundraising goal. Details on the needed improvements are available at DecaturMakers.org.

In addition to the fundraising campaign, Decatur Makers is offering multi-year Founding Memberships at varying levels for individuals and families. Founding Members pay membership fees in advance for access to the facility and workshops and use of tools. Membership levels also include a charitable gift to the organization, and Founding Members will receive prominent recognition in the new space.

The maker movement promotes creating, repairing, repurposing and otherwise making things from electronics to textiles, usually around shared equipment and community space. Decatur Makers is “a welcoming community of inquisitive people who work together in a safe environment to discover, understand, design and create interesting things.”

First Christian Seeking Input From Commmunity on Potential New Rec Center

Reverend Dr. James Brewer-Calvert writes in…

Greetings! I do hope this note finds you well.

You are invited to participate in an open conversation. The First Christian Church of Decatur is holding open conversations on both August 18, at 7:30PM in our Fellowship Hall, and again on Saturday, August 21 at 10AM in our Church and Community Park and Playground on Nelson Ferry Road.

This is an open conversation for both the church and the wider community to discern whether to formulate plans and collect resources to build a new community recreation center dedicated to promoting programs, which could then benefit the citizens of the Decatur community by providing excellent facilities and staff for neighborhood programs such as after-school education and tutoring, health and wellness, sport and athletics, meeting rooms, language and cultural projects, mental health and spiritual wellness services, and so forth. Currently we have a gym facility we have chosen to close for a variety of reasons, which leads us to ask you and each other, “What can we do with our land to help meet specific needs in Decatur?”

There is a valid and practical precedent for such an open conversation and an expectant hope.

First Christian “Toy Park” Clean Up Tomorrow

In lieu of the recent debate…

Please inform your wonderful readership and the wider community that:

At 9AM on Saturday, December 12, 2009, there will be a park clean up and wood chip spreading party at the Church and Community Park and Playground located at First Christian Church of Decatur at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Ave and Nelson Ferry Road.

Hundreds of families in Decatur and from across our fair city love to play and meet at the park. Now is a great time to pitch in — literally — by spreading mulch and wood chips to help freshen the grounds and make nicer for all of our children.

Thank you for your support! For more information contact Pastor James Brewer-Calvert.

Where Have All the Toys Gone?

Brent writes in…

Was out walking this afternoon and ran into several families expressing concern over the missing toys at the most popular toddler park in Atlanta at the corner of Nelson Ferry and Ponce (across from First Christian Church). Children’s cries could be heard all around the neighborhood as they were left to ponder what Grinch was capable of such a horrible act during this Christmas season.

“This can’t happen now, it couldn’t, it wouldn’t, it mustn’t, it shouldn’t; not now, not then; not ever again.”

Occasionally there are clean-up days at the toy park – when old and really broken toys are discarded – but if so many parents are taking note, something may be up.
