City Manager Suggests How To Fund Rec Center & Public Works Renovations

    Decatur Metro | June 8, 2010

Here’s probably the most interesting suggestion in the city manager’s budget message…

…we recommend pursuing an option that would redirect the funds for the public works facility to construction of the Decatur Recreation Center improvements and pursue financing improvements at the existing public works facility through certificates of participation (COPs).

I sent an inquiry to City Manager Peggy Merriss about this option last week and this morning received a memo on the subject which was presented to Decatur’s city commissioners last night.  (I’m not sure if my question inspired the note or I am just so timely it hurts. Either way, I’ll take what I can get.)

The basic crux of the issue is this: $4,275,000 was originally allocated to build a new Public Works Building on a new site.  However, according to the city manager, a suitable site “that was affordable and available that did not impact existing single-family neighborhoods” could not be found.  She continues, “Therefore, the only option that seems viable is to remain in place and purchase two properties adjacent to the existing facility.”

Rec Center Master Plan Input Session Tonight

    Decatur Metro | April 13, 2009

If you can safely make it over to the Rec Center this evening, there’s a Public Imput Session on the Master Plan at 7p.  From Dan Magee…

City Residents: You are invited to the next public input session for the Decatur Recreation Center master plan on Monday, April 13, at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore Street. The City of Decatur is developing a master plan to direct future improvements to the city’s 50 year old recreation center. The first session was held on Tuesday, Dec. 9th and focused on a review of the existing facility, an overview of recreation/community center facilities in similar communities, and invited public discussion around a series of questions to identify program needs and priorities for the building.

Decatur’s Active Living division needs your help in planning how the building can be modernized to serve future community needs. After mid-2009, the Center will no longer be used for high school athletics. This offers an opportunity to consider its future use, especially the 10,000-square-foot gym. LP3 Architects have used information gathered at the December public meeting, from user surveys and from discussions with patrons to develop a preliminary plan for improvements to “the Rec.”

Scott reports that the Rec was a “madhouse” for Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney last night.

Sounds like Little Shop did it again!
