Four Decatur Streets Set To Be Repaved

    Decatur Metro | August 24, 2016 | 11:56 am

    cobblestones

From the last Decatur City Commission meeting…

Four local streets are going to be repaved as part of GDOT’s Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant program.

Congrats to Swanton Way, Chelsea Drive, Olympic Place, and Midway Road!

The originally proposed repaving of Eastland Drive and Pensdale Road has been postponed until next year, due to the lowest bid exceeding to originally estimated cost.

Well, I sure hope the contractor does a better job than the mess on Ansley Street. That was paved about 2 years ago and already the surface at the junction with Jefferson is buckling and cracking. There are incipient potholes already.

Thanks Nick. The pic looks like Oakhurst business district but none of the streets are nearby. Where is this old cobblestone lane?

Looks like Nelson Ferry @ Ponce.

Yup. They exposed this bit of cobblestone on Nelson Ferry when it was repaved a few years back. I got all excited about it too and asked David Junger about it. He said they actually expose a lot of old cobblestones when repaving around the city. But I was still excited because it reconfirmed my “research” that Nelson Ferry is an old road and that it’s name is a remnant of “Old Nelson Ferry Road” that ran all the way from Decatur to the Chattahoochee.

I good portion of King’s Highway was found to be cobblestone when they repaved 15-16 years ago. It look cool and I wished at the time they had left it that way (though I know the maintenance costs and wear&tear on vehicles would be painful)

I hope they do more than just repave midway. No matter how many times they have fixed the pot holes and huge dips in the curve they alway return with the next heavy rain.

The potholes at the curve are most certainly a danger for cyclists. But the crappy state of Midway road is about the only thing that keeps drivers at anything that resembles a reasonable speed. People driving cars go way too fast down Midway, and I fear that a nice, smooth road will make that worse. 🙁

There are bits of cobblestone exposed on
Underwood in Oakhurst but have no idea about the history of that little street.
