This time last year we had little in the way of expectations when we launched the Oakhurst Porchfest. So when we amassed 35 porch registrations in four days, we were pretty excited about it.

This year, with a successful inaugural event under our belts, we’ve already surpassed that mark, to the tune of 58 porches and 57 performers registered in our first 48 hours!

And this much is clear thus far: Mead Road is gonna have one crazy party come October 8th.

At present, their modest, third-of-a-mile stretch features 12 porches. That’s a guarantee of two performances every hour for the duration of the event. And if their yearly take on Mardi Gras is any indicator, you can count on them not phoning it in.

But what about everyone else? Quite a few areas (MAK District and points south, we’re looking at you) still have some rallying to do. And Maxwell Street? They brought it last year but so far this year, all’s quiet on the southwestern front.

As Mom always said, it’s not a competition. But let’s be real. Streets come alive when there’s a concentration of things people like. And if last year tells us anything, we like music and we like our neighbors.
