Colbeh is a beautiful space, but we only ate there once. You have to big the A game to compete in Decatur.

We ate there a bunch until the bar noise got loud.

Do they have a 20-tap bar?! Hoping against hope it’s not Mac McGee’s. But then again, I don’t think they could seat 100?

They have much more draft beer than you would guess.

While we’re looking into the City of Decatur’s management of credit cards, will someone please investigate why we’re spending taxpayer money on running the Decatur High School stadium lights at 11 p.m., 4 a.m., and at other strange times?

To keep the students from making out on the field?

So that’s what they call it now.

Because CSD has only one playing field, in the spring lacrosse and soccer practices bleed into “unusual” hours. Some teams practice before school (starting before dawn and thus needing the lights). The late shift in the evening does not end until 9:30 or so. Obviously this is not ideal for coaches and players and their families but this is what it takes to have an athletic program at Decatur. If you are seriously saying you saw the lights on at 4 am – that should not be happening and should be reported to the DHS office.

I live on the sixth floor of the Artisan, looking south directly at the courthouse parking deck and, beyond it, at the stadium lights. For well over a year—if not two years—those lights have been coming on at all hours of the day and night. For them to be on at midnight is not unusual; it is common for them to be on at 4 a.m. They are slightly annoying to me because some light shines into my bedroom, even with my blinds shut. The Decatur residents I feel sorry for are the people who live in the public housing units along Commerce Street opposite the end of the stadium. I cannot understand the purpose of running the lights at these overnight hours, or even in broad daylight.

The lights should never be on at 4:00 am. Something is wrong, but complaining about it on here is not going to help. You should report it to the principal at DHS first thing the next morning. Thanks.
Broad daylight on a sunny day, same thing. If visibility is bad due to rain or fog, the lights will be turned on so the kids can see.

I’m a nobody. I’m hoping that someone who is SOMEBODY is reading. Right now, I’m being vain enough to think that someone was reading last January when I wrote that the courthouse parking deck was about the ugliest building in Decatur and likened it to a building in Zanzibar, East Africa, with a hundred year growth of mildew. During December, the parking deck was cleaned and is now pristine white.

You’re saying it’s a common occurrence for them to be on at 4 a.m.? As someone who drives by the high school at 545 am every day and has literally never seen them on, I’m wondering if what you’re seeing is the light bleeding from the construction. Those guys are working almost around the clock. The stadium lights should also be off by 11 on game nights, at the latest. If you’re truly seeing the stadium lights on at the times you mentioned, please call the police, because someone has broken in and turned them on.

              • Penelope says:
                April 3, 2016 at 5:44 pm

There is no mistaking the three banks of stadium lights for illumination of the construction site. Closest to Commerce Drive is a shorter standard with two rows of lights; to the east of it (toward the school) are two taller standards with multiple rows of lights. All three are on the south side of the field, facing north (toward The Artisan). Because you did not see them at 5:45 a.m. does not mean that they were not on at 4 a.m. I may call the police when I repeatedly see a young man acting as though he is Hamlet trying to decide if he is going to jump off the parking deck, but I’m not calling them about the stadium lights.
