Looked like an older model Explorer rolled over into the deep empty lot on big Kirk (just east of Mimosa) yesterday. Saw them pulling it out and the top was pretty crushed. Hoping there were no injuries. Anyone know?

Apparently the driver was trying to avoid hitting a squirrel. Sent two kids to the hospital http://www.decaturish.com/2016/06/attempt-to-avoid-hitting-squirrel-sends-two-children-to-the-hospital/

Thank you, Dan. Looks like minimal injuries, which is great news given the severity of the damage to the car.

Dan – several weeks back you posted a recommendation for a handy man. I didn’t need one then but I do now. Can you please repost the contact info? Thanks

      Hello all,

You may have seen me before looking for some freelance website work. I’m very thankful for this platform!

My wife is pregnant now! Very excited – and would like to make some extra diaper/crib/baby money. Do you have a project that I can help with? I’d love to discuss, if so!

Interesting article on Cobb County’s waiver of school taxes for 62 and above. Can Decatur learn from this/make modifications to our proposal prior to putting it on the ballot? http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local-govt-politics/fair-or-foul-cobb-tax-assessor-cuts-his-own-taxes/nrZC9/

It provides an opportunity for CSD and COD can work together for an office of “residency validation” (groan)

      • Mic says:
        June 3, 2016 at 6:42 pm

If this passes in the Fall; watch how many times this will happen in COD (with the resulting loss of revenue being passed on to the rest of us). I suspect a lot. The home-owner savings here would drawf those in Cobb.

Well, one advantage to giving some sort of break to older taxpayers is to keep them in the city. If we childless homeowners sell our houses, new people with kids move in, almost inevitably.

Has anyone had an experience with a gray-haired white gentleman in either a teal or champagne (I just spent 15 minutes on the Googles figuring out the right names for those colors) pickup either trying to run them off the road while you’re driving, or run you over while you’re on foot? Thanks.

Very curious indeed. Teal and champagne are very different colors…

They are very different, but the first thing that came to my mind was those shiny greenish cars parked at the shop in Avondale painted with an indescribable color…but champagne teal is a perfect name for them.

At a recent graduation party I was looking over the program from Decatur High School’s commencement last week and thought it curious that no where in the program did it recognize the achievements of the IB Diploma recipients. When I asked those who were in attendance at the commencement if perhaps the IB Diploma students were recognized in person at the ceremony, they said no. Not. A. Word. The program noted the achievements of the National Honor Society and the DeVry Graduates, but nothing about these kids who were so heavily recruited by the administration at the high school to take part in the rigorous IB Diploma program. We seem to have pride as a community for our International Baccalaureate Program at DHS, but yet no recognition for actually graduating with the IB Diploma?

      • At Home in Decatur says:
        June 5, 2016 at 12:36 pm

Perhaps to avoid adding more stress? My understanding is that some IB diploma candidates have become very stressed, dropped out of sports and other activities, and had risk behavior issues. There has never been special recognition for those who take AP classes, even back before IB when some students took as many as 9-10 AP classes. Maybe it’s best to leave AP and IB classes for those who truly want to take the classes rather than as one more competitive hoop that teens have to jump through.

      • EidleonDrexel says:
        June 5, 2016 at 12:57 pm

My daughter is an IB candidate and just graduated. The IB candidates recieved a special cord to wear with their gowns. They will not get an IB diploma until the exams are graded and their point total meets the requirements. You may have read about the 4 boys soccer players that had to choose to skip an IB exam or the state championship game. They are IB candidates that will not achieve enough points for the diploma due to the missed exam.

      • Geoff says:
        June 6, 2016 at 10:12 am

I wondered about the lack of a single mention of the the IB diploma candidates. Actually, I found it very strange. These kids worked their tail ends off to complete the IB diploma requirements. Does CSD appreciate the efforts of the kids and the teachers who got them there? We’re not sure – not a word was mentioned. Yes, they wore a cord, but there was no mention anywhere of what that cord meant. For as much effort that was put into getting IB in place in our schools, and getting the diploma program in place at the HS, and for implementing the program, I would have thought that something would have been said to celebrate the achievement of the students who are diploma candidates. I would have thought that DHS graduation would have been a perfect place to celebrate this program.

I know there are some Radiohead fans lurking around here…did anyone else go to ATL Collective’s tribute to OK Computer at Terminal West last night? Vastly exceeded my expectations. Also my first time at that venue, which is excellent.
