Halloween Safety Tips From the Decatur Police Department

    From the Decatur Police Department…

If you want to start your trick-or-treating early, drop by the Decatur Police Department this Saturday, October 31st from 3pm-5pm for treats AND free reflective Trick-or-Treat bags!

On Halloween evening there will be additional officers and volunteers patrolling neighborhoods, parks, school properties, the Decatur Cemetery and business districts in marked patrol cars, unmarked cars, bicycles and on foot.

    Safety Tips

    For the youngsters:

    • Go trick-or-treating with a grown-up or in groups if you are old enough and allowed to do so by your parents.
    • Make sure to cross streets properly. Look both ways and look again before crossing and cross at corners or crosswalks. Walking out from in between parked cars is very dangerous because you may not be seen until it is too late.
    • Make sure you are seen! Wear bright colors or something with reflective trim and carry glow sticks, reflective bags and/or flashlights.

    For the rest of us:

    • Know where older kids and teens are and check up on them.

    • Be extra careful and aware of all of the little pedestrians and distracted bigger pedestrians if you are out driving Halloween night.

    • Be responsible if you are drinking.

Don’t forget to worry about all the candy shaped ecstasy that people will be giving out this year. I know I’m always misplacing my stash of molly in with the kids’ Halloween candy.

Tip #1 – Don’t give out Nerds. They are the AMC Gremlin of Halloween candy. Funny to look at, but no one really wants them.

I see from all the likes you got that people actually like Nerds. Well dang, guess I’ll have to add that to my usual handouts of Snickers and M&M’s. 🙂

Warning: I’ll probably say the same thing about Peeps come Easter time. Icky.

Now you are most certainly correct about the Peeps. Gross. A Cadbury Egg on the other hand…

I have two words for you (and Numerals up there):

              Peeps. S’Mores.

              😀

No, no, no. YELLOW Peeps are good. Easter baskets are not complete without them sitting in the green paper “grass”. All other colors of Peeps–blue, green, white, purple, orange (Halloween)–are icky.

            There are now Halloween Peeps…

When I was a kid, there was a dentist who gave out toothbrushes.

Disappointed that there was no mention about the safety and social acceptability of wearing blackface for Halloween. Thank God we have the Oakhurst listerv and facebook page for that.

Spoiler Alert: It’s still not OK, white people!
