Anybody else getting tired of the trash, cigarette buts, alcohol bottles, public drinking and public urination that I have seen repeatedly at the Oakhust Park Corner (Hill, East Lake and Oakview) ? This wonderful jewel of an investment that our community families enjoy daily always seems a bit tarnished IMHO.
Does anyone know if Ammazza is still planning to move into the Twisted Soul Space? I haven’t been over there in a while, but I certainly haven’t heard any updates…
They were already in the midst of a slow reno when the city’s stormwater project closed and tore up the street out front so I’d imagine they’re not in any rush to get the doors open at the moment. Haven’t seen any official word though.
They had a red stop work order up last spring/summer and a contractor’s sign. I’m guessing work was started without a permit.
It would be nice to have a pizza place in Decatur.
Falcons.
FALCONS!!!
Fixed it for you 😉
🙂
Perhaps the most unifying post in the history of FFAF!
Any Decatur bars/restaurants doing Super Bowl viewing parties?

Victory is having one with HD projection
Anyone know what up with the helicopters circling over downtown Decatur this morning?
Big Brother keeping an eye on you
Big Tex? Any updates on the reopening? Thought they were going to be back in business at the end of this past December.
Should be in the next few months. We took November and December off working on Big Tex because other businesses and priorities were pressing. We will keep everyone updated as we get closer. Thanks.
Anybody know what’s up with the helicopter activity near Commerce and West Ponce?
A local realtor has generously donated a house for a mother and daughter who are refugees from Aleppo and don’t have a co-sponsorship. An anonymous benefactor has paid their rent through March, and a group of Decatur-area volunteers is helping to get the place fixed up. The cost is estimated at $15k, and any money left over after repair expenses will pay utilities. We are almost at our goal. You can contribute here: https://www.gofundme.com/fixerupper-for-refugees
(this is not a scam on the part of a realtor trying to get a house fixed up for free; I can provide proof if you want it)
Also in the works is a coalition of local refugee volunteers. If you work with refugees as part of a group or church ministry, and you are interested in connecting with others, please contact me.
Thanks for the recommendation. I made a donation.
Bell’s Hopslam – is it really that good? In response to FM Fats (1-29-17 FFAF): 11 pubs and restaurants within 1 mile of zip 30030 listed as having it. Melton’s (1.4 mi) has to free up a tap before they can pour it; and they only have 1 keg. Can also find retail locations on the website. Bellsbeer dot com if the site doesn’t come thru.

It is good, but I am not sure it is that good. It really stood out as a great bear a few years back, but that was before the explosion of craft breweries. With so many great craft beers out today, I am not going out of my way just to get a glass (but, if I am already at a restaurant with Hopslam on tap, you can bet I will be ordering it).
Agree with Dawgfan’s assesment. Speaking of great beer, there’s a new Japanese brewpub that’s flying mostly under the radar for now. It’s called Hopstix and is located in Chamblee near the MARTA station. They soft opened this week. They don’t have their own beers ready yet, but they have about a dozen other local breweries on tap (including Wrecking Bar and Scofflaw). Sushi and robata grill items are really good. As far as I know, there are no other Asian food brewpubs in the southeast. The owner is a great guy too.
And for those who prefer to do their beer exploring on MARTA, the #19 bus from Decatur is about as good a cross town bus as you’ll find. Five minute walk from the bus bay at Chamblee station.
Hopslam is good, but overrated in my opinion. And I have been ready for Hopstix to open!!
Incredibly hoppy as you’d guess from the name. I don’t normally go for hoppy beers, but tried one out of curiosity a couple years ago. First few tastes hit like a hop truck, then it got better and better as my taste buds threw in the towel. So, worth a try, don’t make any life and beer altering decisions until you’ve finished the whole bottle. Or can or glass.
Shout out to the 17 swimmers on the Decatur High School Swim Dawgs state team. This is the largest team I know of making the qualifying times for the state meet. Due to unfortunate circumstances, most will not be allowed to compete in the state meet held today at GA Tech. So sad for all of them, particularly the seniors who worked hard this season.
Why will most swimmers be unable to swim in the state meet?
There appears to have been an administrative oversight that led to the students not being able to compete. Dr. Dude ain’t too happy about it, as his letters indicate. http://www.decaturish.com/2017/02/due-to-oversight-decatur-high-students-barred-from-state-swim-meet/
Thanks for following that up. What’s also notable is Dr. Dude’s tone with GHSA’s Executive Director for shirking his responsibilities in making a fair decision about the situation. Good for him for taking them on!
Re: Helicopter Activity. I reached out to Lt. Jennifer Ross who said, “Nothing going on other than a Falcons rally at the Maloof Building.”
What’s the difference between “reaching out” and “asking”?
Reaching out is friendlier.
I said to myself: “Is that sign outside of Agnes Scott a drawing of a clitoris on a pink background?”
It turns out that, yes, that is exactly what it was.
“Clitical Thinking: The Art of Sophia Wallace” is on exhibit at the gallery at Agnes Scott.
I’d really like to know how many people recognized the drawing.
I’m not touching that one ….
That’s what she said.
That’s what she said.
You got me thinking about the episode of “Everybody Loves Raymond” where Marie makes that sculpture in art class. So funny.
Heads up that the entire Westchester 3rd grade left their original block prints, postcards illustrating their environmental projects around the Square for the weekend (the songs and assembly may have attracted the helicopter, by the way—hard competition for the singers).
Not only the block prints, but on the back of each postcard (which can be found in tree crooks, by the gazebo, etc.—have fun looking around) is a QR code that takes you to the artist’s own webpage about acid rain, methane gas, etc., complete with a slide show and a place to leave feedback for the kids.
3rd grade public scholarship — gotta love it.
I know the kids would LOVE it if you took a look. As noted above, there’s a QR on the back of each piece and the work these kids put into the project is both amazing and uplifting. They would greatly appreciate it if you’d leave feedback – can be done via the website accessed by the QR.
Riding the momentum from today’s rally: I am looking for a home in CSD for a Syrian family: Mom, dad, four school-aged children, and their grandfather.
I know two families who have been given rent-free places to live, and of course that’s the best option. But discounted is great, too.
I am also looking for a job for a male refugee. His English skills are not great, but he’s taking classes and improving. He has a driver’s license, a car (another generous donation!), and all the papers needed to work legally.
Thank y’all.
