Your Favorite Bakeries in Atlanta/Decatur Area

    Decatur Metro | June 3, 2015 | 9:56 am

    proofbake

Cakes and Ale’s Proof Bakeshop – one of Zagat’s 30 Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings of Spring 2015 – just opened it’s doors a couple of weeks ago.

Seems like good a time as any to talk about bakeries!  Obviously a “bakery” can produce a large variety of items.  Bread, cakes, pastries, doughnuts, etc.  So maybe it’s not quite fair to clump them all in the same thread.  Or maybe it is.  Either way, here we are.  :-)

What are your favorite bakeries in Atlanta/Decatur?  And what items at said bakery are the ones you eat to your heart’s content?

Not a fancy bakery, but Bob does have a fancy pasty chef pedigree, so…I love all the straight-forward, no-fuss offerings at Pastries a Go Go. In particular on the bakery tip, the cranberry muffins are excellent!

Love, love, love the cheese straws here but they aren’t usually available.

Yes! I ordered some one Thanksgiving, I believe. Yum.

The Sticky Buns are only serve on weekends but they are the best I have had. Seriously, try them.

My wife went to Proof on Saturday hoping to find something to bring to a get-together. She said all they had were cookies. Hopefully they’re long term goal is to offer more than just cookies.

It is SO-o-o good. A little hard to cut though, even with a bread knife. Should I be asking for it to be pre-sliced?

+2. We love Mr. Anchovy’s wares!

The cheese and poppyseed scone at Alon’s is incredible. I need one in my life regularly.

I’m also really into everything at Sweet Hut in midtown. I’ve enjoyed their Buford Highway location for a while — good to have them closer to home.

Also love Breadgarden near Piedmont Park and H&F bakery outlet on west side.

I love Sweet Hut! The bakery area at Hmart is delicious too. I love trying out all of the asian bakeries on Buford Highway.

We just visited that bakery at H Mart this weekend and picked up a bunch of stuff including their wonderful sliced bread. Enjoyed it!

Sweet Hut has a new intown location. On Peachtree around 10th St. Sort of across from the Margaret Mitchell house.

Classic European pastries at Alon’s are hard to beat–my favorites are the poppyseed and apricot pastries/coffee rings.

Went to Proof last Saturday. They’ve got some kinks to work out on service. I needed to pack a lunch while I waited to order breakfast.

I had a similar experience last week. It was during the day , not at all crowded but the employees just didn’t seem to have any urgency about waiting on customers. As mentioned above, their selection of sweet things was sparse and they had no bread at all. These are the same issues that led me to stop going to their location on the square.

Emerald City Bagels is my current favorite, but so far it’s just a pop-up shop.

Love Alon’s, for sure, but also love La Calavera on E. College Avenue–their chocolate babka is to DIE for!

      • JC says:

La Calavera is quickly becoming a favorite stop on the way to work. Limited selection of items, but all equally awesome.

I’m sure I can’t be the only one excited for Highland Bakery to show up in town. Their baked goods are amazing.

Love Calavera. Great breads and croissants etc. also they come to our markets.

      1. Ratio for my croissant fixes
      2. Southern Sweets for their chocolate pecan tart
      3. For bread (and I really like bread) I spread my money between Ratio and Calavera.

I would love to add Lion Tamer to my list, but their location is the wrong corner of Decatur, especially when factoring in traffic.

My biggest disappointment was the Bakery at Cakes and Ale. Wonderful, wonderful breads but so incredibly frustrating whether they would have any on hand on the square, whether they would be at the farmers’ market, or having other staffing issues. Embittered, I’ve had to move on.

love Lion Tamer – I can walk to it – yeah! (had no idea I was living in the wrong corner of Decatur).

I’m sure that it is a perfectly wonderful corner of Decatur if you live there, but for those of us coming from Oakhurst and the Square, we have to worry about the dismal traffic during rush hour.

      La Calavera for sure.

The Village Corner German Restaurant & Bakery – Stone Mountian

Great selection and variety of pies, cookies & struedel

Is the second version of the German bakery on Lawrenceville Hwy near the Home Depot still open? It was real good but I don’t go by that way much anymore.

Wow! Those were the most scrumptious apple fritters. I’m still searching the earth for anything that comes close.

      La Calavera, hands down.

I, too, love La Calavera — they are now our main source for bread for sandwiches and I love treating myself to a cinnamon roll or other yummy when I go in to purchase. But I also want to give a shout out to Good Karma for truly delicious gluten free treats! I work with a couple of truly gluten-intolerant folks (not just the fad diet version) so it’s really important to make sure there’s no gluten when bringing in treats to share. Having had some rather dismal gluten-free baked goods, I was quite skeptical, but Good Karma is able to deliver treats that our whole office can enjoy. I especially love their muffins (mmm, chai tea muffins!) and their banana bread. Plus I’ve purchased their gluten-free baking flour to make some treats myself, although I suppose that undermines the purpose of this thread.

If you’re willing to drive to the Ga Tech area, Sublime Donuts is totally worth the drive! I love Revolution, but Sublime takes the cake. (pun intended)

No vegan bakery mentions? For some of us it’s a dietary restriction. Dulce vegan bakery and cafe in Kirkwood.
