I say leave it.
+1. There’s a great street — Cooledge, I think — over by Piedmont Park where the residents discovered the original brick underneath. They worked with the city who came up with the costs to do a full scrape and repair and levied an assessment on all the property owners. Today the street is gorgeous and I guarantee that no one speeds down it. Also, it’s not an issue for bicyclists because that’s a pretty connected/gridded area. It’s easy to bypass the street.
Love the old cobblestones, but wouldn’t be fun to run or bike on
Don’t underestimate the fun of biking on cobblestones: try it in Rome, Appian Way. Bumpy but awesome.
This reminds me of my favorite risque joke. As this is a family blog I’ll only give the punch line. “I never came this way before.” “It’s the cobblestones.”
It’s like a free chiropractic adjustment! Or will necessitate one…
Leave It! Leave It! Leave It! Leave It! Leave It!
Paint them teal.
I’m so glad we’ve circled back to teal. I kept trying to figure out how to factor teal into the Compassionate Decatur and 14-year-old-armed-robber threads but couldn’t do so.
Those won’t fall apart like the cross walks did! I don’t think it goes the length of the whole street, further up it looks like just aggregate road bed that has been churned up. Wonder if back in the day they just had the cobble as an entry to the neighborhood?
It would also be “green” because it appears pervious.
You never hear anyone say, “they pulled up that cobblestone and underneath was the most beautiful old asphalt street”
Please leave the cobblestones!
just what we need, Brick Paving Machine Coolest Thing You See Today
Pretty awesome, but there’s a lot of advantageous editing in there that makes it look like there’s less handwork and time required than there actually is. For instance, they must have to pause to custom cut all of the little triangles to fill out the edges of the design (or cut them in advance).
Much of Fayetteville rd. is also cobblestone underneath and was used as a major troop.thoroughfare during the civil war. There are a number of very old and historic roads in Decatur as most of you know. I used to think it was cool when they were doing work on Oakview to see the old trolley tracks still there under the asphalt.
I have been thinking about these cobblestones considerably since I first saw them a few days ago, and I really want the city to keep the cobblestones uncovered on Nelson Ferry.
I decided to reach out to my City Commissioner. It was suggested that the first steps in keeping the Cobbles uncovered would be to generate overwhelming popular support. Then the roads would have to accommodate adequate draining standards (required by the city).
First step is support.
I’m in.
Blast from the Past: I just saw this old DM Free for all Friday post from the spring of 1871. The dude’s screen name was BelgiansRule! His post read:
For crying out loud, when are we going to do something about the horrible state of our village cobblestones . I’ve heard that Newark has this progressive new stuff that smooths out their roads and everyone is happy. Our commissioners should fund a study to find out more. I think it’s called assfault, or something like that.
Invented by a Scot.
Or perhaps a Belgian.
I’m looking forward to shredding fresh asphalt.
