Decatur Neighborhood Clean Up Is On! What Are You Getting Rid Of?
Decatur Metro | April 27, 2016 | 11:55 amAvoid the dangers of a max-capacity Pay-As-You Throw bag!
In case you did know, Decatur’s Neighborhood Clean Up Days (formerly “Super Trash Day” or “Trash Amnesty Day”) commenced earlier this month and run thru Saturday, June 4th.
If you’re new to Decatur, this is the one day a year when you can put most anything out by the curb and the city will pick it up and dispose of it. The city summarizes the items it will take, thusly…
- Yard trimmings
- Building materials (not from the work of private contractors)
- Tires
- Furniture
- Appliances (not containing Freon)
- Trash that won’t fit into pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) bags
Pretty sweet huh? However, they won’t take everything. You can’t throw out the following items on Neighborhood Clean Up Day: Liquids, Dirt, Bricks, Blocks, Stone, rocks, or concrete, or Motor vehicle batteries or parts.
It’s that easy.
“OK, great. So when is this glorious day?”, you ask.
Well, it’s staggered by neighborhood. Some neighborhoods’ clean up day have come and gone already (my bad), but here’s a quick summary of when neighborhoods should get their old water heaters and ovens out to the curb.

It might be shorter for me this year to make a list of what I didn’t get rid of.
I thought my neighborhood was Ponce de Leon Heights but it is never listed as that by the City for things like Super Trash Day (but also other correspondence). Anyone know why?
Not sure what we’ll be tossing yet (there is a Super Trash day pile under the house).
Old Decatur Circle, off of Forkner Drive, has been left off the Decatur Heights list….wonder if any other streets are not mentioned in the listing?
I would call the city and check. We had an issue last year where our street was listed in the wrong neighborhood. I assumed it was due to some mysterious scheduling reason but I realized we had a problem when our throwaway mound of garbage was still there late in the afternoon and our street had been skipped over. I ended up chasing down the trash team and convincing them to come back but it was a stressful moment to think I might be hauling a huge pile back to the house for next year.
Our neighborhood is last, but I’m already piling up plywood scraps and broken stuff I’m finding as I clean in and behind my shed. Now if only I can resist visiting the other neighborhoods before then to pick through everyone else’s treasures. Trying to stick by my New Year’s resolution: do NOT drag home free stuff unless you have an immediate plan to use it. A plan does not consist of “hmm, I think I can make something out of that…”
I wish they would change the order of neighborhoods – I live in Oakhurst and we’re always first, and I always miss it because I don’t hear about it until around week 3. 🙁
I agree.
I wish we could get a flyer on our door like we do at Thanksgiving and Christmas that tells us the dates
It happens every year in April and May, it’s on the City website, the Decatur Minute website, this website, Decaurish and noted in the Focus newsletter. Producing and passing out flyers would be extra and, IMO, unnecessary expense.
Thanks Nick. I worked pretty hard on that five bagger as I recall. For years it was four bags tops and if lucky, a fiver but recently, I’ve resigned myself to three bagging. There is only so much stompin’ an old geezer can do with a size 13 boot, you know what I mean? Won quite a few battles in the Decatur Yellow Bag Garbage War but alas, it’s time to realize what General Lee must have felt at Appomattox and that is, fish or cut bait? General Wheeler, the Hero of Decatur, would have encouraged the fight but General Longstreet, the “War Horse”, would say cut bait.
What do you think DM readers?
