Book as Art Gala Opening Tonight!
Decatur Metro | August 28, 2014 | 12:02 pmHere we go. If you thought that tomorrow night’s Joyce Carol Oates keynote kicked off the Book Festival weekend, you’d be sorta right. But there are lots of other events going on starting today! For example, don’t miss tonight’s Book as Art gala opening at the Art Institute.
The Decatur Arts Alliance (DAA), in conjunction with the gallery of The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur (AIA-Decatur), is bringing v.2 of the juried exhibition of artists’ books to that great celebration of the printed word, the AJC Decatur Book Festival. The Book as Art: Expanding the Limits, continues to exhibit an exciting visual component of the largest independent book festival in the country.
The gallery’s location at the Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur Gallery on the Decatur Square in the heart of the Festival grounds is ideally accessible to the more than 85,000 attendees at the Festival. The exhibition will also participate in art|DBF. The exhibition demonstrates new and creative approaches to the tangible versions of books, even as they morph into new forms and formats. The selected works of art introduce the viewer to new thinking about familiar forms, and include sculptural adaptations, exquisite applications of traditional book formats, hanging works, and other unexpected pleasures.
Jurors for the 2014 exhibition were Alex Campos, New York, NY; Mary Murphy, Atlanta, GA; and Barbara Tetenbaum, Portland, OR. Juror Mary Murphy, curator of the artists’ book collection at SCAD, will present a short gallery talk during the July 18 soft opening of the show. The gala opening will take place on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

And if you’re interested in learning more, the event received a great review in Burnaway earlier this week.
So, this is a gala as in, pay $200 to attend, or anybody can go?
Diane- this is free as are most of the events and openings that the Decatur Arts Alliance puts on.
Even the DBF web site doesn’t seem to indicate what time this “soft opening” starts. Anyone have any idea?
