Does anyone know the story of the homeless woman who has a series of shopping carts around Big Kroger? I see people talking to her and taking her food sometimes.

I have always wondered how she came to be there for so many years without getting help from a shelter, church, etc.

I think this has been talked about before on DM. My understanding is that she refuses help. At least the shelter kind…

from what i’ve heard, people have reached out to her many times but she’s happy doing what she’s doing and doesn’t want her situation to change. i would assume there’s some psychological issues involved, but if she’s not harming anyone there’s little justification for making her receive help she doesn’t want.

This has come up a few times before on DM. I believe the answer has always been yes, she’s been approached with help many times but has always refused anything beyond just basic necessities.

[Edit: Looks like I’m late to the party.]

I was told by someone who lives nearby that she actually has a sister in the area, but she refuses help from her also.

The sign in the window at Fresh-to-Order (aka, the Greek diner, Hola!, etc) says they open mid-September. That seemed like new info to me, so I’m passing it along…

They were handing out free tea/drink samples (I really liked the apple cinnamon tea), menus, and swag today and the guy working the sample booth told me they open in two weeks.

Looks like the author of Hiking Atlanta’s Hidden Forests is speaking at DBF on Sunday afternoon. I recall a good amount of interest about that book when we discussed it back in April.

Is Decatur having any issues with dirt bikes and ATVs?

I haven’t seen them in Decatur, but they are definitely an annoyance around East Lake.

Can someone recommend an electrician that can diagnose a perpetually tripping breaker and do the necessary repairs? Rate is a consideration since it might take hours to find the culprit. Thanks in advance.

On Call Electric is based in Avondale Estates and the electrician is good, prompt, reliable and reasonable. Jeremiah Zeis, 678-898-1635

Someone asked last week but I don’t think there was a response. Can anyone recommend a person to reseal my granite counters? Or a product I should use? The joints are also losing their grout so we need to fix that too. Any recommendations appreciated.

My favorite handyman is Ben Brackner, and 678-920-8204. If he doesn’t do this, he’ll know somebody who does. He’s reliable and trustworthy and reasonable.

Does anyone know why high school soccer is played in the spring alongside baseball, lacrosse, track & field, golf, and tennis in Georgia with only football and cross county in the fall? I’m specifically talking about the boys programs.

When I was in high school our football program was not competing for the same athletes with our soccer program; our football players were not interested in playing soccer and vice versa (outside of a kicker or two), and it allowed those who played soccer in the fall to try another sport in the spring and our baseball/lacrosse/golf/tennis players to try soccer in the fall. Here, it seems likely that some of those spring programs would be fighting for the same high school athletes, and shifting soccer into the fall could open up some additional opportunities for high school athletes.

But, then again, do kids even play multiple sports these days? It seems like many kids now pick one sport at a young age and play it year round. And maybe the importance of the high school team has diminished and the focus now is more on the club system? The whole youth sports landscape appears to have changed.

Football rules. The GHSA governs HS athletics in Georgia. They are all about football with very little regard for other sports. The only way I see this changing is if football declines in popularity. Otherwise expect soccer to stay in the spring.

Thanks for the response. I also wonder if lacrosse will eventually have some kind of an impact down the line here in Georgia. It may just be me, but that sport seems to be growing rapidly.

“The only way I see this changing is if football declines in popularity.”

Actually, in terms of participation, football has been declining for several years in the U.S.. Don’t know if that’s true for Georgia too, but I suspect it is for metro Atlanta.

It’s gonna take a series of high-profile injury cases to take football down. Like, when insurance companies decide they just aren’t going to cover it anymore.

Nice Decatur moment. I was taking my standard evening dog walk around the Square–this time with my teenaged son. We talked about all the visitors that would be coming to the city this weekend. I’ve always noticed how dirty Starbucks’ sidewalk gets in the evening. I asked my kid to wait while I politely alerted the folks inside to a rather big mess. The employee was great. She informed me that they are not allowed outside to clean up after dark as a security precaution. I thanked her for letting me know and walked out. When I got outside and explained the situation to my son, he said he wanted to clean it up himself. He started gathering up all the trash. Soon there was too much to carry, so I went inside and asked for a garbage bag. The employee was so sweet–she told me to thank my son and then told me to send him in for a free drink. When he finished cleaning the corner, my kid was too embarrassed to go in there to get the drink. I said goodbye to the employee but she insisted on the drink. Grabbed my kid’s favorite Starbucks drink and handed it to him for the walk home. Love our town. Love hosting the Decatur Book Festival!

Can anyone recommend an appliance repair person/firm for a Jenn-Air range, that is not Jenn-Air (who charges $280 just to show up)? Thanks!
