Decatur Education Foundation Needs Your Gently-Used Books

    Decatur Metro | July 28, 2014 | 11:09 am

    From the Decatur Education Foundation…

DEF needs your gently-used children’s books!
It is sometimes hard to give up well-loved books – even when your book shelves are overcrowded.  At DEF we understand that difficulty all to well for we, too, are lovers of books and their well-told stories.  However,  the DEF Reader-to-Reader Children’s Book Sale @ the Decatur Book Fair is great way to make sure those books find new loving owners.  The books are sold at a reasonable price and all proceeds support DEF literacy programs such as Book Fair Bucks, Project Bookshelf, On The Same Page, and author visits to every CSD school.  All of which allows the entire school community to benefit from your donations!
If you would like your books to reach new eager readers, please contact Nia Schooler at Nia@DecaturEducationFoundation.org to arrange for drop-off or pick-up of your donations.

    Decatur Book Festival Seeking Volunteers

    Decatur Metro | July 25, 2014 | 3:15 pm

ajcdbfVolunteer Decatur sent out this call for Decatur Book Fest volunteers…

It’s Almost Book Festival Time! Lots of Volunteer Openings Available

The Decatur Book Festival is just around the corner. Beginning the afternoon of Friday, August 29 and running through the evening of Sunday, August 31, the festival is Decatur’s largest special event and relies heavily on support from volunteers.  There are many different types of jobs – set-up, working at author venues, merchandise and souvenir sales, and more – so invite your friends, neighbors and co-workers to volunteer. All volunteers receive a free festival t-shirt and a free book coupon to spend at the festival.

Have you already registered with Volunteer Decatur? Click here to see DBF openings: https://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=119321

Haven’t volunteered yet in Decatur? Click here to get started: https://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/ap?AP=1003453979

Can’t find what you are looking for? Have questions? Please contact the Decatur Visitor and Volunteer Center via email at [email protected] , or call us at 678-615-0915. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. We can find a volunteer opening that will work for you.

    Thanks for your interest!

    Decatur Metro | July 25, 2014 | 10:11 am

The Guru reports in FFAF that Arepa Mia has a sign up next to Piece of Cake in the Trackside strip along East College Ave.  We first reported Arepa Mia’s Decatur location back in May, but the location was unclear.  Now we know!

Check out their Facebook page for further details.  No word on an opening date yet.

Dunkin’ Donuts Withdraws Proposal for Scott Boulevard Location

    Decatur Metro | July 25, 2014 | 9:34 am

    avon

    From the Medlock neighborhood website…

The Dunkin’ Donuts’ (DD) special land use permit (SLUP) proposed for 1450 Scott Blvd (old Avon Bldg. site) was withdrawn* at the Board of Commissioners’ session on July 22.

Many were looking forward to a Dunkin’ Donuts but others warned that DD’s concessions, although substantial, did not address key impacts such as additional pollution from idling cars and traffic congestion. Specifically, the drive-through’s peak operation hours would have coincided with rush hour traffic at an already congested two-lane stretch of road.
