Your Favorite Farmer’s Markets?
Decatur Metro | June 4, 2014 | 8:31 am
Funny, that we hadn’t thought of this one before. Should be an interesting discussion!
What are your favorite farmer’s markets around Atlanta and beyond?

Really like the Sunday morning Grant Park Farmer’s Market. Has incredible food, live music and a playground to occupy the kids.
How about a list of when and where they are held?
Seeing McD in the background of this photo gave me my morning chuckle.
The farmer’s market doesn’t have McRibs!
Nothing beats the wonderful aroma, friendly employees, caring management and ecologically sensitive Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market.
Whichever has the closest parking spot for my Suburu Leaf Prius
Ha. How appropriate that Susan Puckett, James Beard Finalist and author of “Citizen Farmers” is featured so prominently in this shot.
I like the Thursday, 4pm – 8 pm, East Atlanta Villlage market. I can stop in on my way after daycare pickup downtown on the way home (in Decatur) and it has music and kids activities, too. There are hotdog and pizza vendors in case the little one can’t wait for supper. Last summer someone was selling frozen, shaved watermelon that was pretty delicious.
I mainly like that it doesn’t compete with our other Saturday morning activities.
I know I should say Decatur’s, but…even thuogh I do like it, it’s not my favorite. I think my favorite indoor one is Buford Highway’s, and outdoor one is Morningside’s.
The Tucker Farmer’s market is good. It’s on Thursday 4-8. It has Pearson’s peaches, reasonably priced delicious eggs and is next to a good beer growler store, The Crafted Beer Growler. I also have enjoyed the new Freedom Farmer’s Market at the Carter Center on Saturdays 9-1.
You’ve pretty much described the AE Farmers’ Market with the Pearson Farms peaches, fresh eggs, and near a Growler Store. Plus AE has Pine Street Market and other yumminess. Check it out Sundays 10-2!
This thread prompted me to look up the ELF Market (East Lake – at corner of Hosea Williams and 2nd). It has moved from Saturday mornings to Tuesdays 4-dusk.
+1 on Grant Park. The setting sets it apart from any of the other markets on this side of town.
I agree with those that say that Grant Park does the best job of the ones on this side of town.
I have never been, but the one on Peachtree Rd in Buckhead is widely considered the best market.
While the location change to Decatur Baptist on Wednesday’s is a big improvement over the BofA parking lot, there is still something lacking about the product selection.
Agree that the Decatur Farmers Market isn’t the biggest or best, but since it’s the closest to me, that’s the one I attend. I’ve come to depend on it for fresh lettuce, peaches, breads, applesauce, green onions, radishes, tomatoes, and pastries, depending on the season.
Wait, you buy applesauce at a farmer’s market? What is it, like $10 a jar? That’s the easiest thing in the world to make in a crockpot! Maybe I should start making some extra cash by setting up a booth there!
If it’s as good as what is sold at the DFM, I’ll buy it! The vendor who makes it gets so busy during the summer growing/selling season that it’s not available for about 4 months of the year.
Forgot to add snap peas and string beans. Supermarket string beans and tomatoes are flavorless.
Grant Park’s is the best one I’ve been to lately. Tucker’s is nice for a smaller one. I hate to say it, but Decatur’s is lacking compared to how great most things are here.
For an indoor one I’ll take Buford Hwy over Your DeKalb, mainly because it’s easier to deal with, but also because they have a superior fish and seafood counter (and it makes for an excellent combo trip with Gu’s Bistro, my current restaurant obsession).
Davis, California. Heck of a commute though!
Was thinking the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on the Embarcadero, but it’s 90 miles further than Davis.
“Was thinking the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on the Embarcadero,”
Will be there at the end of this month. Any must buys?
We haven’t been there in a long time. I used to work at the Federal Reserve Bank right across from the Embarcadero, so we’d do the farmers market on Tuesday and Thursday for lunch. I hear it gets crazy on the weekend, so I’d try it during the week if you can. The Ferry Building is an adventure in itself, with Blue Bottle Coffee, Cowgirl Creamery (artisan cheese), and wine and olive oil tasting. I read that Slanted Door (also in the Ferry Building) was recently named the top restaurant in the country by the Beard Foundation. I’m jealous, and suddenly hungry…

I hope the Ponce Market ends up having a similar vibe to the Ferry Building. I treasure my t-shirt from the Boccalone Salumeria.
Thanks for that. Just made a lunch reservation for the Slanted Door. Dinner was booked for the entire time we’re there.
+1 for Blue Bottle Coffee!!!!!!!!! Also, take the FREE tour of Tcho (chocolate) just a few blocks down the street. Must make reservations online in advance, as the tours fill up quickly. Lots of free samples at the end, too.
Charleston Farmers Market in Charleston SC is excellent. Do a Google Image search for “Charleston Farmers Market” and you’ll see what I mean.
Under the Jones Falls Expressway in Baltimore. Not a pretty venue, but mini donuts made right in front of you, crabs off the boat, and eastern shore corn. Doesn’t get much better.
Anywhere you can buy seafood from the person that took it off the hook or out of the trap, you’re in my idea of heaven.
Even better if it’s still alive, so you can throw it back in the water and nobody has to eat disgusting, icky seafood.
more for the rest of us, better than Festivus
Portland Farmer’s Market, great use of unused space under railways.
Saturday morning, Forsyth Park, Savannah
Des Moines! It’s four blocks long every Saturday.
I’ll add another in the far and wide category: Saturday morning on Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin. A festive atmosphere, an abundance of vegetables, cheese curds, and great people watching.
Has anyone tried the relatively new Avondale Estates Farmers’ Market on Sunday mornings? I live in Avondale, and just haven’t remembered to go yet. Wondering if it’s worth my time.
I’ve enjoyed watching it grow. I’d like to see more farmers, but I’m hoping they will come as more produce is available and the AE market becomes more established. Pearson Farms is there with peaches now as well as a couple of other farms and there are lots of vendors selling interesting products. We’ve tried out lots of new things. You should definitely check it out!
