Scott Boulevard Church Redevelopment Approved, Site Work Could Begin Late Summer

The Medlock Area Neighborhood Association website reports…
The BOC and ZBA approved Fuqua Development’s application to rezone and the variances required to redevelop the SBBC site and nearby residential properties on Barton Way. This vote clears the way for Phase 1, to include apartments and townhomes and a “coffee shop.” There was no opposition to the application and the BOC voted to accept the request with conditions negotiated by the Cross-Neighborhoods Committee*. Relevant Cross-Neighborhood Committee documents are available in pdf format: letters of support to the BOC and ZBA, conditions, and schematics.
According to the site, the Cross-Neighborhood committee also negoiated a legally-binding agreement that result in Fuqua “finishing pedestrian improvements at the Medlock / North Decatur Rd. / Scott Blvd. intersection as well as a future sidewalk on Scott Boulevad between Willow Lane and Medlock Road”
The project is slated to commence with site work in August or September of this year.

Hey DawgFan, just want to correct something you said somewhere on here last week regarding Fuqua adding the coffee shop space to manipulate the zoning designation–that wasn’t the case. When it became clear that the original proposed plan with equal retail emphasis wasn’t compatible with the in/out access of the SBBC site, Fuqua came back with a residential only concept with all retail moved to Phase II (fingers crossed!) Several Cross-Neighborhoods Committee reps felt very strongly about including a coffee shop or wine bar space as a gathering spot amenity for area residents in Phase I. (I didn’t.) Fuqua listened and acted on their request.
I was only guessing. And I thought it was a poison pill to deter annexation by CoD, not manipulate zoning.
Dang, you’re right. I shoulda gone searching for it.
On the poison pill thing: This isn’t the only new multifamily being proposed– there will be more in Phase II. :0)
i have a vague feeling of discomfort with ALL of this—i can’t articulate exactly why, yet the urge to complain is so strong in me, i must, nonetheless, until further notice, issue a global protest against any and all change*.
*property value appreciation not included.
So in other words, you are opposed to this, but unsure why. And you want to lash out at something/someone, but are unsure what/who. And you’re having trouble getting organized on how to protest it.
Congratulations, you’re the new leader of Good Growth Dekalb!
Once the church goes away, Melton’s will be able to successfully acquire a liquor permit if they desire, yes?
And former Maddy’s location.
Isn’t there still a church on the opposite corner? Kind of groovy 60s thing?
Oh yeah, forgot about that one.
gotta love liquor laws.
Yeah, just another example of their quirkiness…The North Decatur Presbyterian may be too close to Melton’s. The distance is measured by walking from door to door using sidewalks. Maddy’s was within the threshold distance of the Baptist church, but beyond that of the Presbyterian. Just shows you the power of Baptists in Georgia ;).
They really ought to revise the laws to be denomination-specific. For example, I happen to know that Presbyterians and Catholics are ok with drinking. In fact, it may be required at Irish wakes ♣ .
they ought to revise them and get jesus (a known alcohol provider) out of my liquor laws.
Good point about water to wine thing. What is the theological basis for the abstinence advocated by some Christian denominations?
Yes, Presbyterians are totally down with beer, wine and good ol’ likker. (And At Home in Decatur, let’s not forget the hard-drinking Scots – there are not too many Irish Presbyterians, I’ll wager.) As a tippling member of the “groovy 60s thing”, I’d ask that no one blame us for ordinances that result in the harshing of Melton’s mellow. That being said, we ain’t gonna pack up and move, either. Our location means we can get our Jesus on and then grab a beer after Sunday service faster than anybody else in the Decatur area. Can I get an AMEN?
