Decatur Commissioner Fred Boykin Announces He’ll Run for Another Term

    Decatur Metro | July 8, 2013

6a00d834515cf969e2010534c9e6e1970b-640wiDecatur Commissioner Fred Boykin just sent in this announcement…

I am pleased to announce my intention to seek another term on the Decatur City Commission. It has been an honor and a privilege to represent this community since I was first elected in 2001. Decatur has certainly changed since then. We have a vibrant Square, downtown residential, a bustling Oakhurst, and a crackerjack school system – just to name a few of our community’s many accomplishments. We’ve updated many of our city buildings  – City Hall, Fire Stations 1 & 2, the Recreation Center and Glenlake Park. We’ve created new Boards to help guide our community – the Active Living Board, Environmental Sustainability Board, and soon to come – the Lifelong Communities Board. The list goes on.

However, there is still much to do – infrastructure enhancements like the Church Street redesign, N. McDonough and the railroad crossing improvements, plus Public Works, the Beacon Hill Complex and the Calloway Building are all in the design phase or under construction. We have annexation and taxation issues plus new zoning guidelines to work out. An update of our tree ordinance and a number of our other codes is needed. The list goes on.

I have taken part in these kinds of decisions since I was first elected and I believe I have fairly represented Decatur and tried to do what was in the best interests of our community. I say now what I said in 2009: I do my homework, keep up with the issues, listen to the community and then vote for what I believe best for Decatur. I believe my efforts when combined with the high level of involvement of so many of you have helped Decatur become the community that it is – the community we care so much about.

I ask for your support and your vote this November. My campaign website will be up shortly and I will be out in the community to hear your thoughts. If you would like to contact me before then, feel free to email  or give me a call.

    Thank you,

Fred Boykin, Decatur City Commission, District 1

I would think that Fred would more likely ride for another term rather than run for another term.
      Rim shot.

I’m glad to see that the Commisioner post is appealing enough for folks to want to continue, and I think our Commision does an admirable job.

Mr. Boykin, since you mention specifically that you believe the tree ordinance is one that needs to be updated, I would be curious as to how exactly you would update it if it were up to you. I’m looking forward to seeing that discuused on your campaign website to see how you balance this type of ordinance with property rights.

Good luck, and keep up the good work.

I am glad to see that Mr. Boykin will run for reelection, not because I agree with many of his decisions as commissioner, but because if he didn’t run, there is no telling what kind of left wing fringe candidate might run and appeal to the general will of the New Decatur. He reminds me of an Old School Yankee Democrat: like-able, family man, willing to listen, understands small business, can both tell and listen to a good story or joke, and feels confortable around all kinds of racial, income, political and gender groups. I would like him more if he would support less spending, restrict the strategic planners, and question green and smart growth groupies but he might be the best a conservative can hope for in Decatur politics.
I hope people don’t see this as an endorsement. My support would truely be the kiss of death for any Decatur candidate. But I do wish Mr. Boykin well and look forward to the campaign.

You’re right, Chris. If he didn’t run, I would. Your faux-Conservative nightmare. Maybe next time…

Sorry I don’t know this – but is he running opposed, are there other candidates for his seat?

No one else has announced, but the qualifying period isn’t until the end of August, so there’s plenty of time for others to offer.
