Blind Dog Lost Near Avondale Estates

Nichole writes in…

I was hoping you could help get the word out about my neighbor’s lost dog. Her name is Pookie, she is a 13 year old blind Jack Russell mix. She somehow escaped her yard on Monday, Aug. 27th in the morning on the corner of Forrest Boulevard and Wiltshire near Avondale Estates. She is chipped, but was not wearing a collar.

  1. Nichole,
I am sorry to be the person to deliver this news. This dog matches the description of a dog found in Midway Woods by my neighbor and had been hit by a yard truck early Monday. County sanitation picked up the deceased dog.

    1. Oh no! We’ve been spoiled by all the happy endings to the lost dog posts here but this was bound to happen at some point. I feel so bad for her owners who have to live with the fact that her life ended this way. Hopefully they will be consoled by the long life she lived.

Damn, I wish I hadn’t checked in for an update on this story now…

      1. Ditto. I was certain I was about to see good news of a pooch/person reunion. So sad.

  2. Oh… that’s one of the worst pet stories I’ve ever heard. Poor little thing. I feel so badly for his owners too.

  3. I am so sad to hear this news. I, too, want to send condolences to Pookie’s people. I am very sorry for your loss and hope the warm thoughts sent your way help comfort you.

  4. Yes, lots of love and hugs to the owners. We had something very similar happen to us a few years ago. Please don’t feel guilty.. sometimes the little guys just find their way out. AWOL moments happen to all doggie parents at one time or another.

  5. Pookie was my familys dog and we will miss her greatly. But I need help locating her remains. I was told that dekalb county sanitation was called and a pickup ticket was issued when they got there, they didn’t see the body. I spoke with the couple who called dekalb county sanitation (she passed in front of their house) and they said they called Tuesday morning but they didn’t notice when she was gone. I was concerned that they put her in a bag and she got mistaken for trash but they said they left her there. Does anyone know where she may have been taken? Maybe someone knows if she was buried by a neighbor or if they took her somewhere?? I have called every animal clinic in the neighboring areas to see if someone turned her in and nothing. Not trusting what dekalb couny sanitation animal pickup told me I even went so far as to visit the crematorium to check through all the dead animals that were brought in yesterday. No Pookie:( someone has to know something. Please help my family and my 5 year old niece get some closure.

  6. As a side note while at the crematorium I noticed deceased pets that were obviously someones pets, some had collars and I asked if they call owners or scan for microchip. The response made my stomach turn and I quote “sanitations job is to remove the animals and any hazardous material and I dispose of them (incinerate them basically)” I ask what is the point of microchipping or collars and tags? They don’t even bother to call ppl. Animal control has no interaction with deceased animals so no nothing just cremation. Im thinking about calling media!! Next thing you know they will say they don’t have the funds to spend the 5 seconds it takes to scan and make a call. What is wrong with this picture???
