Greene’s Beer, Wine and Soda Shop Now Open
Decatur Metro | July 3, 2012You may recall a while back we reported that Greene’s Fine Foods on East Trinity, which specialized in fudge, candy and ice cream would soon be expanding into the world of adult beverages; including wine, beer and growlers. Tommy writes in to tell us that ”Greene’s Growlers, Craft Beer, Wine, and Soda shop is now open for business!”
To get an idea of the 16 beers currently on tap at Greene’s new Growler station, see the pic above.

Awesome addition, can’t wait to swing by.
I never thought GA would sell beer on Sunday. And yet, it did. Now, I’d love to see a change in the law allowing for tiny Dixie cup-sized tasters at Growler dispensaries.
You can walk around Whole Foods with a cold one.
oh, yes. Tried it; liked it. But I imagine WF likes it even more.
OK, so it did turn out to be what some of us thought (were hoping) it would be! Looks pretty draned awesome…gonna have to drop by for an adult float!
I’m walking distance to a growler now…should add at least a pint to the WALK SCORE.
No, walk scores are still measured in “points”. You must have been thinking of Scott’s Pub Sheds

I missed that “Pub Sheds” article the first time around. Great piece!
The next step? To-go cups like they have in Savannah.
What kind of soda? Do you have to drink it all at one time lest it go flat?
I see beer taps, but what would really make my heart go pitta-pat is an old-fashioned soda fountain serving a vanilla phosphate (and addiction developed and nurtured while attending college in the Midwest)… Dare I hope for a Coca-cola made on the spot from syrup and fizzy water? Is that even possible any more? And if it is, may I also have two really skinny, paper straws? And a grilled cheese sandwich on light bread?
Pretty much any time you have a Coke dispensed in a bar/movie theater/restaurant or anywhere you’re not having it out of a can or bottle, you’re having it “made on the spot from syrup and fizzy water.” It’s just that the syrup is coming out of a plastic bladder in a cardboard box and the fizzy water is coming out of a plastic spigot. Not as charming as the old soda fountain equipment, but exactly the same product mixed exactly the same way.
I wouldn’t quite say “exactly” the same way. The great part about the process done by hand is that the final product is a variable. Not great for brand consistency, of course, but in days of yore, some soda jerks were known for a heavier touch, some a lighter touch, when it came to the syrup. And there was also plenty of mixing and experimentation, some of which gained notoriety locally and regionally. If I heard the story correctly, that’s how cherry Cokes became a thing. (Thankfully, for the sake of the kids, there’s still bartenders in Decatur that will make a semi old fashioned cherry Coke. The Coke’s from the dispenser but they eyeball it on the cherry syrup.)
thank you, Scott
If I can’t have a fountain Coke, can I have one in a 6-oz glass bottle, with a small bag of salted peanuts to dump in it?
Egg cream soda, please
Was there yesterday. Nice. No drinking alcohol on premises. Take away only. I’d be happy with Mexican cokes in the bottle. I currently have to go to Latino section at Kroger to get them. Would be nice to be able to stop for that for a treat. Can’t fathom that in the birthplace of Coca-Cola we can’t get a REAL Coke. If Ms. Obama wants to tackle obesity she could start with getting rid of corn subsidies and high fruc corn syrup.
Word to the wise: Costco sells Mexican Coke (in glass bottles) by the case. But yeah, would be nice if cane sugar was standard. You can thank our friendly national corn lobby for ours being made with HFCS.
Thanks for the Costco tip!
Oakhurst Market has Mexican coke, cold and ready
The Cook’s Warehouse and Sherlock’s Wine Merchant in Decatur has been selling growlers for almost a year. It is great to have another choice now. The next step is for brewpubs to be able to dispense their beer.
Greene’s sales for their wide selection of nuts should go way up too. Nuts & beer…who would have thought?:)
…. or nuts in Decatur
