Ain’t that a sweet overhang!
Also, the entire interior has been gutted. Currently it’s just a huge open space. Not sure if there’s a tenant yet though, as there’s still a For Lease sign on the front exterior. Lookin’ good, nonetheless!

Donut shop. Downtown needs a fresh made (fried while you wait) donut shop. It would make a killing.
Agree.
Can we start the campaign for a Sublime Doughnuts franchise in Decatur? The drive to GT is almost too far, even though the A-town creams are worth it.
Yes, and it needs to be open during the morning AND evening, for maximum donuttery.
+1
And, let’s throw in Malasada’s > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malasada
Saw these on a recent episode of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.”
Yes, please!
We are living in a donut desert
I’m not sure a donut shop next to a new bakery is a good idea.

Historic? I didn’t no there was any thing historic about the 50’s, except rock & roll!
50 years makes a building eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
There is no tenant yet. Ideas welcome! 2600 square feet.
As wished by others before, a New York village style jazz and blues club.
Oh, wow– that looks ever so much better than that awful faux-mansard facade!
Mini Walmart. He he he
DC has a “chain” called busboys and poets. Something like that could kill in Decatur.
Oh, I like that!
Thanks for that. Looks like a great place that (at least the concept) Really could do well here. Here is their webpage: http://www.busboysandpoets.com/about.php
The bookstore at B&P is fantastic. The food — not so much. It’s ok. But not great.
Vegetarian restaurant please – someone said the Grit should come to Decatur and I’m going to run with that idea.
I would love to see the Grit in Decatur…I bet a lot of people would be misled by the name though–Cracker Barrel or Waffle House it ain’t.
The Grit or Morelli’s. Anything else and I am going to be pissed the hell off! Especially if it becomes another yogurt place…
I thought I read that the Grit was looking at the Watershed space. Anyone else hear that?
Would love to see a “Laughing Seed” go there!
As one who regularly drives to Athens *solely* to eat there (just a few hours ago, in fact), I’ve certainly wanted something of this nature for years. It just makes sense.
The Grit or Laughing Seed sounds great!
While Cakes & Ale isn’t strictly vegetarian, it is heavily vegetable driven, with quite a few meatless dishes on the menu in my experience. So while a vegetarian restaurant in Decatur certainly makes sense, I’m not sure this is the best place for it. The Watershed space or the old C&A space would be better spots.
or a Sunflower Cafe- that would be excellent1
My son requests Organic Chinese. I like that idea too.
Toy and game store. High quality stuff you can’t get at Target. You know, like wooden toys, cool kites, good board games, puzzles, etc.
Or, Half moon outfitters.
like Richard’s Variety in midtown
Already tried a store that was exactly that. It was called Hoopla (where Homegrown and Taste are now) and it went belly up.
Thanks for the photo! I walked by that today and thought, “hmm, how odd that I never noticed that before.”
Doh!
Real NYC style bagels or gelato
Barcade
Laundromat.
Build-a-bear outlet.
Casino.
I know you were joking but that actually would be kind of fun once/if ever *real* gambling becomes legal here. And lots of tax revenue potential! Lots of states are looking into legalizing gambling to help their budgets out.
But until then, and keeping with your games theme, maybe an arcade!
Unfortunately, gambling brings crime too. But it might pull the crime away from Chick Fil A! (Just kidding, we were there over the weekend!)
“we were there over the weekend!”
You’re lucky to be alive!
I feel like I need to throw in a disclaimer that wasn’t an attempt to make a joke at anyone else’s expense. It was just an easy opening for a joke, nothing more.
Having to be PC all the time is a real buzz kill.
It is, isn’t it? I wouldn’t have put in the disclaimer– the humour-impaired are always going to find something to get huffy about!
I was kidding too!
Comic book / gaming store – like Oxford II.
one day when I win the lotto, I plan on opening a game/comic store here in Dec.
From your keyboard to God’s inbox…
A variety store like the old 5-and-10¢ stores would be great! I remember going to the little 5 and dime store in my grandparents’ town for candy and, at the start of ever summer, a giant plastic ball with the swirly colors all over it. Great memories…
Woodworking / art supply / hobby store
Office supply store
Electronics boutique
Sporting goods
Yes, I’ve long thought an arts/hobby store is sorely needed here. There are some things you just have to drive to Michael’s to get, and I wish that weren’t so.
Starship
Is that an arcade?
+1
That would go a long way toward making sure Decatur isn’t completely kid-centric!
OK, is anyone going to tell me what this is???
Let’s just say they could help you out with a black light Jimi Hendrix poster and a bong.
I believe they call themselves an “adult novelty store”
I guess they did strike me as oddly shaped bongs.
Never mind– I just asked one of my colleagues…if it’s really what he says it is, whoah! You’re really asking for it, stg!! I’m glad I didn’t google it…
Hey, it was Brenda’s idea!
Lest one forget that ‘adult novelty toys’ may cause an increase in children. Take necessary precautions, people.
I am an advocate for more diversity. But that is not the kind of diversity I had in mind.
Toy Store – we need a really cool and fun toy store. Everyone good (small) downtown has one. One that appeals to all ages (not just baby toys and clothes).
Brenda already said toy store with her comment about Starship.
Oh wait, you mean…uh, never mind.
We had a toy store like that for years off of Ponce, The Inner Child. It was great, lots of unusual toys and games, great puzzles.
+1. In its heyday, that store fostered an ironclad expectation that you could wait until you were on the way, in the car, taking your child to some other child’s birthday party, and you could swing by and find a perfect gift. Done.
Which is what I did many a time when I had little people.
It was wonderful. Hoopla kind of got there too but was more limited in range. I also like The Toy Store in Ansley Park but it’s not convenient and hits a slightly older age range. If someone had guts, energy, seed money, and business brains, they ought to try to replicate O.P. Taylor’s in Brevard–it covers the range from infant to young child to older child, from dolls to hobby kits to model trainsets to board games to novelty items, from inexpensive to FAO Schwartz level of prices. It’s a destination, not just a store. It would definitely have whatever one needed for a birthday gift from age 1 through 13, if not older.
Please steal my ideas!
How about a good “meat and three”? Not greasy southern but good home-cooked food. We do not need another upscale restaurant to draw more beautiful people into Decatur.
Urinal Cakes and Pails?
High end Whiskey and Vodka shop … So I can quit having to use my car to leave Decatur.
Still waiting for a Vietnamese/pho/banh mi joint. There’s nothing of the kind in CoD since Viet Chateau closed, making the closest option Saigon Cafe, and that means getting in the car.
Great idea!
