Suspect Who Ran Over Atlanta Officer Patrick Apoian Turns Himself In
Decatur Metro | August 16, 2011The AJC reports that the man accused of running over Atlanta Police investigator Patrick Apoian turned himself in yesterday after a month of hiding out. Here’s a blurb…
Despite pleas from his family to turn himself in, [Khalif ] Edwards remained on the run until Monday. Family members insisted they did not know his whereabouts until receiving the call Monday. He is expected to face numerous charges, including aggravated assault, aggravated battery, simple battery, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and cruelty to children, police said.
The AJC also reports that Officer Apoian is still recovering from serious injuries from the event, but was sent home last week.
Thanks to Bijoux404 for the heads up.

we could just run him over as well and call it even
“Family members insisted they did not know his whereabouts until receiving the call Monday.”
For their sake, I hope that’s true, because if not, they’ve got some music to face also.
my first thought is that they or some of them knew at some point.
Khalif’s grandmother is a longtime member of the Oakhurst community and still lives there. His aunt is a former president of the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association — long before Decatur was a gleam in the eye of many current residents. They are stalwart members of our community. They and the rest of the Edwards family were as appalled as anyone at what happened and took every possibly occasion to urge Khalif to turn himself in. Khalif’s grandmother, who is a sharp and strong woman, but a good distance from her tender years, was constantly approached by the Decatur police about Khalif’s whereabouts. She had no idea where he was and made it clear she would turn him in if he appeared at her home.
Thanks for posting this. It is beyond some people’s abilities to imagine multi-dimensional tragedies. I’m guessing spelling it out for them probably won’t overcome that.
The kid got scared but the kid got some sense and decided against suicide by cop. But he’ll still be in jail until he’s my age. I’m 56. It’s a tragedy for Khalif Edwards, but some actions can’t be forgiven, period.
This wasn’t just “some cop” he decided to run over and run from. This was our cop, my cop and your cop. A cop who was prized by the community he served. And when this happened he wasn’t even (technically) on city time — he was working for the Kirkwood Safety Patrol. He was putting in extra time even at the risk of being said to have “gone native.”
Khalif Edwards made a mistake. It’s the last one he’ll ever make.
I don’t think everyone in his family knew his exact whereabouts at all times. I think anyone who is on the run will at one point contact someone in their family, whether that person tells the rest of the family, who knows. I doubt that anyone on the run for a month will have not contacted any of the family members. Even if it’s a “tell so and so i’m ok/not dead” message.
