Agnes Scott & Decatur: A Match Made in Heaven
Decatur Metro | August 10, 2011What does Decatur mean to Agnes Scott? (What Agnes Scott means to Decatur is a separate post!)
Here’s one very influential indicator (courtesy of an ASC press release)…
For the second year in a row, the college was No. 10 on Princeton Review’s “Best Quality of Life” ranking. The college also was once again included in the guide’s Best 376 Colleges list.
According to The Princeton Review’s student surveys, Agnes Scott boasts a “great location, gorgeous campus and superb academics.”
Great location? Thanks Decatur! And then there’s this other ranking…
No. 12 – Town and gown relations are great (ASC’s fourth consecutive year in the top 10)
Some may scoff at Princeton Reviews rankings, but I recall relying on them quite heavily when I was picking a school to give me a starting point for judging the intangibles of college life.

The place is truly a gem and adds so much charm to that part of Decatur!
It is also an anchor for the revitilization of Winnona, Oakhurst, East Lake. In 1980s and early 90s that area was considered increasingly unsafe as you got further from the college.
“Town and gown relations”
Am I the only one who has never heard it phrased that way before?
Probably.
It comes from Oxford …
It is a British thing.
We have Agnes Scott to thank for some of the best teachers in the Decatur school system. Thank you!
I ran as fast and far away from the Midwestern suburb/prison I was raised in. I was too poor to visit ASC before enrolling on my nice scholarship, and now that I’ve graduated, I want to stay in Decatur forever.
Seriously, this is everything I’ve ever wanted in a place to live. I realize that I’m gushing, but it’ll take my little apartment building burning to the ground to get me out of here – and even then, I could build a yurt on the lot (a >1500 sq ft yurt, that is)
