Oakhurst Tennis Court Access Now Available to Residents
Decatur Metro | April 13, 2011From City Commissioner Patti Garrett’s blog…
The tennis courts in Oakhurst Park are now available to city residents!
Thanks to Jabari Cole, Program Supervisor, Tennis and Aquatics, and to Assistant City Manager David Junger for making this happen. According to Jabari, combination locks have been installed on the courts, and if a resident would like to use a court all they need to do is call the tennis center (404-377-7231) to make sure the court is not scheduled and they will be given a code to open the court. The combination is changed frequently in order to manage the use of the courts. Jabari also indicated there is no charge for residents to use the courts. There should be a sign on the gate to the tennis court which explains the details and the telephone number to the tennis center.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any 4.5 or higher tennis players out there who would want to play?
I’m sure I can play at least 4.5 minutes before giving up. Is that what you meant?
That’s impressive, JT, but I meant the USTA skill rankings. I have never figured out the ALTA rankings, but I think I’m somewhere around A or AA.
Sorry, didn’t mean for you to take me seriously. Nobody else here does
I would love to play, Winnona Mom!
Winnona Mom,
I’d be happy to introduce you to some 4.5 level players. You could also come to Sunday Morning drills at 9:30am. A large percentage of the players that frequent the Sunday morning drills are 4.0 level and above.
And if you’re ever interested in joining a high-A Sunday women’s ALTA team, we’d love to have you:-).
This is so typical of Jabari…finding yet another way to improve city services for residents. He is such an asset to the city, and is so good at his job.
My kids LOVE Jabari, and if you’ve never seen him work with a group of children, take the opportunity to do so. His patience, sense of humor, and desire to teach are unmatched.
Easy on the eyes, too.
now if i could figure out where these phantom volleyball courts are i’d be set
now we need the city to step up to the plate and fix the BATHROOMS. They are atrocious. the doors do not close or lock, by the way. Embarrassing! But kudos to Jabari.
Well done – a simple solution that was a long time coming. (I am getting too old to climb the fence any more
Woo hoo! This is fantastic. The whole thing with having to go-to-Glenlake-for-the-key-for-the-lock was such a hassle.
I thought this was an Onion article. A public tennis court that has been in place for years is just now available for residents? Who was it available to before – the prestigious but little known Oakhurst Lawn and Tennis Club?
Just guessing here, but I think it probably was always “available.” You just needed to have it unlocked if you didn’t have it reserved. But it sounds like you had to get the key from Glenlake (from above comment).
(This probably explains why I’ve never seen it used by just casual players. I’ve only seen what appear to be league meets or matches from what I assume are ATLA groups at certain times of the year).
Thank you for the kind words. I will continue to attempt to improve the level of service that Decatur Active Living provides to the citizens of Decatur. Any suggestions will always be appreciated.
Any chance this will happen sometime soon with the tennis courts behind the library?
The policy at the Scott Park courts behind the library is the same as the policy at the Oakhurst courts. Decatur Residents may call the tennis center at 404-377-7231 and you will be provided with a code to allow you free access to the Scott Park tennis courts.
I hadn’t been in awhile. Thanks for setting me straight!
I did not mention that the free access ends at 6pm each day. All players must pay fees during the evening hours to offset the cost of lighting the courts during those hours. The Scott Park tennis courts will also be closed for use beginning sometime in May. The recreation center and the firestation will be undergoing major renovations which puts the tennis courts in the middle of a construction zone. The tennis courts will also be renovated once the renovations to the recreation center and the firestation have been completed.
