Sunday Liquor Sales Bill Clears GA Senate, Passage “Probable”

    Decatur Metro | March 16, 2011 | 1:31 pm

After nearly dying in committee, the AJC reports that after four hours of debate, the Georgia Senate has approved legislation 32-22 that would allow local jurisdictions to decide for themselves whether to allow the Sunday retail sale of alcohol.

The bill will now go to the House of Representatives “where passage is considered probable”, according to the AJC’s Jay Bookman.

As we’ve mentioned before, Gov. Nathan Deal has already stated publicly that he is willing to sign the measure.  So, if passed, Decatur and/or DeKalb residents will most likely soon be given the option to vote on whether to allow Sunday sales.

In terms of Decatur, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb thinking that such a measure would pass rather easily here.

Leveling the playing field for stores that sell alcohol to compete with restaurants and giving consumers more options – sounds like a win-win to me!

      Great news!
I did think that the not so separate church and state was going to stop this in its tracks. Glad reason prevailed!

Passage of this bill is one of the 7 signs of the apocalypse, no?

Great. With any luck I’ll soon be able to get liquored up and take my guns to church.

Soon I’ll be able to drive through Chick-fil-A on a Sunday after church and order a sandwich and a beer to go! That’ll be heaven.

The only people opposed would be the pub owners.

Finally, a dent in Georgia’s version of Sharia law. Of course, local imams can still impose their will, but hey — baby steps, right?

Just after I moved to Atlanta (from England), I wandered the wine section in the grocery store for 30 minutes late one evening to start my cellar (aisle was admittedly a bit quiet). When I got to the checkout, I was told I couldn’t buy alcohol, as it was a Sunday!

A few days later, a colleague was heading out at lunchtime to one of the big warehouse clubs, and asked if I wanted to tag along as he had a guest pass. While he was shopping, I stocked up on wine and headed to the checkout…. Only to be told that I couldn’t buy alcohol, because it was an election day!

I did start to wonder where I was moving to…..
