Saturday Poll Question
Decatur Metro | June 19, 2010 | 10:19 amHere’s something I’ve been wondering a lot recently.
For me, comments are the lifeblood of this site. Not only do they help keep me going day in and day out, but they always provide great context, alternative opinion to stories AND often offer great tips for new stories.
However, I also hear from lots of folks who primarily keep in touch with DM through RSS , Facebook, Twitter or the email feature. So I’m sometimes conflicted about whether to turn a comment into a post (as I did with the recent Cakes & Ale “fresh bread” post) to give that other viewing audience a heads-up.
I think I need to be doing it more, but let’s see…

I follow DM on Facebook, but when an article sounds relevant to me (or interesting enough to spur a major discussion in the comments), I click through and read the post + comments on the site. I usually don’t read all the FFAF comments, though, so comments there that include important info should definitely be made into their own post!
Pretty much officer peruse the comments of any headline I see on the facebook news feed.
It’s Only sometimes instead of ale ays because I read in an RSS feed….
This poll is strictly for those who access your site via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, etc. correct?
No, it’s for all. I have to imagine those folks would want important comments republished, since they wouldn’t see them otherwise.
I did not even know you were on Twitter (which I never use) or on Facebook. I get you through a RSS but I always hit the RSS link to get to the blog. I get a lot of useful information from reading the comments.
Dang, so it’s essentially a 50/50 tie between sometimes and always?
Of course it may be a bit skewed by the fact that people who come directly to the site are over-represented since by default those only monitoring the site are probably less likely to respond to a poll.
Hmm…well I guess this means it can’t hurt to republish some stuff.
Um… I think the results are skewed because you polled on a weekend! (Always lighter traffic.) Keep on polling & gathering feedback!
I can’t imagine why folks would EVER pass up reading what’s being said!. DM commenters ( & you!) ROCK!!! Entertaining, informative, great way to gain a better understanding of different takes on life! And when the really smart folks get to fussing– whee doggies!!!
I think there is a lot of leeway between “sometimes” and “always.” Although I put “always” I usually won’t do that on a survey (it seems so absolute). So unless you ALWAYS (100% of the time) check, you have to put “sometimes.” I think a lot of your “sometimes” are probably “usuallys.” 🙂
To further complicate things: I always read the comments except for some subjects, e.g., City Schools. Your comments section, DM, is the best entertainment value in town.
Dang straight! Only took years of moderating, asking countless questions and holding conversations with myself and a few others to get it going!
But of course YOU know that Parker. 🙂
i’m trying to stop reading the comments since most of them seem to be from the same folks… very negative and cynical.
