Charis Books Teaming Up with Agnes Scott In Move To Decatur
Decatur Metro | December 15, 2016 | 11:40 amAtlanta Intown reports that Charis Books is moving from Little 5 Points to South Candler Street in Decatur. In a recent letter, Elizabeth Anderson, executive director of the bookstore’s nonprofit arm Charis Circle, states…
Charis Books and Charis Circle will begin planning our move to a beautiful, freestanding Victorian house located at 184 South Candler Rd., Decatur, GA 30030, across the street from the historic Agnes Scott College campus. We will continue to be the Charis Books and Charis Circle you know and love: we will continue to be a home for independent and marginalized voices, and a popular education center for intersectional feminist justice.
She also notes that Agnes Scott College will “be making a significant investment in partnering to build this new home with Charis”.
The new location is larger than their current location and that there will be “space for daytime events, reading groups, and social gatherings, which will allow us to expand the scope of our current program offerings.”, according to Anderson’s note.
Charis is raising funds to help with the move and renovations. You can make a donation and get more information at this link.
Wow, that’s great news. I needed that.
South Candler Street, not Road. Candler Road is in the County.
Ack! I hope Lyn doesn’t see this!!
Awesome! Welcome to the neighborhood!
This is kind of awesome. Used to live in Candler Park, and Charis is a great bookstore, among the many other good services they provide. Very cool that Agnes Scott saw them as a resource to their students and a worth investment.
Very nice! Wasn’t Charis thinking of moving to Decatur once before? Maybe around 5-7 years ago? I love, love, love small independent bookstores and support all of them in and near Decatur to the point of not balancing my budget. While Congress is working on tax reform, maybe it could add books to itemizable tax deductions?
I have no doubt by that this Congress will value book learning above all else.
Super excited about this!
How many houses on South Candler around Agnes Scott are zoned commercial?
None. Looks like they’re moving into a house that’s zoned Institutional as part of the campus. If this is happening in partnership with ASC, they’ll likely operate under the same provisions that allow for a campus bookstore or cafe.
Is this the gorgeous one that’s currently being renovated by ASC?
If you mean the big Victorian, no. That will be the new President’s home.
