ATLANTA, Jan. 28, 2010 – Girls Rock Camp (ATL), an all-girl nonprofit music program, invites women ages 19 and up to participate in Ladies Rock Camp, March 12-14, 2010. The weekend event invites participants to learn to play an instrument, form bands, attend workshops, and perform in a live concert. Ladies Rock Camp (ATL) – including the grand finale camper showcase and songwriting workshop with local activist and singer/songwriter Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls, is a fundraiser for Girls Rock Camp (ATL).
“Ladies Rock Camp is an opportunity for women to be part of what Girls Rock Camp campers already know is an amazing bonding and empowering experience,” said Stacey Singer, co-director of Girls Rock Camp (ATL). “The weekend will be a chance for women to let loose and make loud, original, rockin’ music together, all while supporting a younger generation of creative girls.”
Ladies Rock Camp (ATL) is limited to 25 participants and will be held at Atlanta Charter Middle School. No prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is on a first come, first served basis. The three-day program ends with a live band performance Sunday, March 14 at the Five Spot in Little Five Points. The showcase is open to the public.
Tuition for Ladies Rock Camp (ATL) is $350 and will help fund Girls Rock Camp (ATL)’s summer 2010 program, as well as development of additional outreach programs that will bring the rock camp experience to at-risk girls throughout the state of Georgia. Each year, every camper is subsidized and full scholarships are provided to 20 percent of Girls Rock Campers.
Girls Rock Camp (ATL) is a six-day camp where girls ages 10-16 form bands, learn to play instruments, write original songs and rehearse for their public debut. Campers are instructed in guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals and participate in workshops geared toward encouraging freedom of expression, self-esteem and community respect. The girls form bands and perform in a rock and roll showcase at a prominent Atlanta venue on the last day of camp.
Girls Rock Camp (ATL) is run by dedicated volunteers, with support from such well-known Atlanta artists as Sugarland and Indigo Girls. The organization provides holistic encouragement, instruction, mentorship, and safer space in which girls can express themselves through music. Girls Rock Camp (ATL) offers tools to help girls challenge debilitating social, political, and economic constructs, and supports their development as freethinking individuals and community members.
