Open & Closed: Signature Revolutions Closes After Roughly 45 Days
Decatur Metro | January 31, 2010 | 12:50 pmThe clothing store, Signature Revolutions, which opened in the old Eviva space at 335 West Ponce de Leon Ave has closed it’s doors for good after just a month and a half in business.
Jennifer, who works next door, reported the news to DM via Twitter yesterday.
I’m not sure of the reason for such a quick close, but the strangeness of it reminded me of an odd experience a reader reported a couple weeks ago…
I walked in [to Signature Revolutions] the other day, and it was a really odd experience. While the storefront is stark and the decor reflects remnants of the holiday season, the owners were sitting back relaxing and playing cards. And if the sparse selection and quality of their stock wasn’t enough of a red flag, the conversation I had with them left me speechless.
How could a business come and go in just 45 days?

This may be similar to what has happened in Stone Mountain Village. Apparently, people get business loans/developmental grants, open a crappy business that is destined to fail, and skip out on the loan and unpaid bills. It has happened more than once and accounts for a lot of the empty storefronts in Stone Mountain.
I hesitate to call it a scam but…
Opening and then closing a retail establishment so quickly, citing insufficient profits and the like,.. is it in any way analogous to funding a really bad film that one knows won’t make any money or even get distributed so as to make it a tax write-off?
Has downtown Decatur fared better in the rate of here-today-gone-next-week store openings and closings when compared to Roswell or Marietta Square?

Don’t quote me on this, but there may have been a fire involved. Our office saw fire trucks outside that building two and a half weeks ago and my boss claims to have seen smoke inside the suite.
There were firetrucks out there a few weeks ago (i work at fabu), that was, from what I heard, due to frozen water pipes that went to the sprinklers. Anytime anything happens to the sprinkler system, or water bursts from the pipes, the alarms will go off thru the WHOLE building, and then the fire trucks usually show up automatically. But that doesn’t mean that nothing happened over there. I didnt see anything myself, but who knows. I know they were open over last weekend and were having a 20% entire store sale, and I saw that on Friday they were closed, and then Saturday they were gone.
Yes, I can confirm that the fire was from frozen pipes in the building! Regarding the clothing store, I don’t know which is better – a poor quality store, or no store at all?? This seems to be a regular pattern in this part of Decatur lately, and if you’ll notice that most of the empty storefronts – Little Azio, Signature Revolutions, Tastings, Kaleidescope, etc. all have the same sign: “Available – CARTEL Properties”. Which brings me to a bigger question. Is there anything that our City’s economic development officials can do to work with this developer and the business owners to whom he leases, to ensure that they have the adequate resources they need to last more than 45 days?!
