Run the Third Annual “Beat the Street For Little Feet” on Halloween

Decatur Metro | October 20, 2009

Rebecca sends in all the info for this year’s “Beat the Street For Little Feet” 5k run event, which raises funds for Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool.

Feet of all sizes are welcome! Join Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool families for a Saturday morning of running and fun on October 31, 2009 at 9AM in Candler Park. The race will include not only a 5K with special jog stroller division, but also a 1-mile race for younger participants, and a “fun run” for our community’s youngest runners. Stick around for the FREE post-race Children’s Festival with live children’s music, a costume contest, face painting, food, and loads of festivities for the kids.

And for all you “Pete the Cat” fans, award-winning local artist James Dean has created another one-of-a-kind race T-shirt for the event. This year, Pete and kittens are in costume! To check out the new T-shirt design and to register for the race, visit our website, www.oakhurstcoop.com. You also can register at www.active.com or at the Big Peach Running Company in downtown Decatur.

Not a runner, but love Pete the Cat? Sign up to be a ghost runner and still get your t-shirt. Check us out at: www.oakhurstcoop.com for more information.

Can someone explain to me why this preschool is called “Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool” but is located in 30307? I am not new to Decatur by any stretch, nor to Oakhurst, yet I do not understand! And the website is no help.

It’s so Georgia. Why do parts of DeKalb County that are miles from City of Decatur have a Decatur post office address? Why is City of Decatur in DeKalb County, not Decatur County? Why is Jasper in Pickens County and not Jasper County? Why is Clayton in Rabun County and not Clayton County? Why is Macon in Bibb County and not Macon County? Why isn’t Grady Hospital in Grady County? There’s too many geographical units in Georgia to have enough logical names! California, with 36 million people, has only 58 counties whereas Georgia, population 9.7 million, has 159 counties!

This one is easy – per Harvey Newman at GSU-

Unincorporated DeKalb areas do not have a real city portion for the post office to use. Our Decatur post office handles the mail for particular zipcodes. Therefore, “Decatur” in this instance only means “this letter goes through the Decatur post office”. There are portions of unincorporated DeKalb over by Emory whose addresses say “Atlanta” for the same reason.

Hi, just wanted to help with the question about our school’s name. This cooperative preschool was started by parents who live in the Oakhurst neighborhood, a few years ago. The web site has a link to community events whetr you can see more info and includes your race registration form and link for Paypal if you would like to pre-register. The site even shows a race route map. Hope this helps! :^)

It is my understanding that the preschool started in Oakhurst but outgrew their space and moved just outside the city limits. I also heard that the preschool wanted to have their festival in Oakhurst (or in Decatur), because most of the kids and parents still live in Oakhurst, but that Mayor Floyd and the city manager blocked this from happening because the school is now technically outside of the city limits.
