Halloween Events For Adults In and Around Decatur?
Decatur Metro | October 19, 2009Salli writes in…
Are there any fun events for adults going on in or around Decatur on Halloween? The Twain’s party sounds fun, but I thought I would see what else is out there.
Thanks!
I’m a bit outta the loop in terms of other ghoulish “adult” functions around Decatur, so I’m appealing to you gentle readers.
There is an amazing (open) party called “Scarendipity” held every year in the former MJ Dollar Funeral Home on Howard St in Kirkwood/Decatur. It’s now a private residence, but they open it up on Halloween. It’s been written up in the Loafing as a “can’t miss” party. Thousands come to this thing in all kinds of crazy costumes, and I can tell you from personal experience there’s nothing like it in the ATL… They have several bands playing funk and rock on an outdoor stage, a DJ tent, giant bonfire, and last year there were several burning-man style “art cars” driving about. (The home has 4 acres, in the middle of they city.) They light the place up to look like the Munsters house –it’s a real mansion. Only thing is to get there early, like before 9, or be prepared to walk many blocks. They ask for a donation at the door, and proceeds go to a different charity each year.
Well, maybe not strictly for adults – but not for small children, either:
Annual Oakhurst Haunted House
Friday Oct 30th and Saturday Oct 31st from 7:00PM till 11:00PM
630 Eastlake Drive – Decatur (Oakhurst Village)
$5 Admission OR Canned Good Donation
Proceeds go toward feeding needy families in Oakhurst for Thanksgiving
Not appropriate for small children
Check out the Fernbank Fright Night. It’s on 10/30, so if you have kids it won’t interfere with actual Halloween. Drinks, Dave FM DJ, Costumes, Van Halen Cover Band, Beetlejuice screenings – I have pasted the URL below:

Thanks for the suggestions. Halloween is my favorite holiday and since it’s on a weekend again this year, I want to find something fun to do!
Does anyone know if Scarendipity is alcohol free or BYOB?
At Little Shop of Stories, we’re having a Graveyard Book Halloween (we’ll-get-Neil Gaiman-to-Decatur-one-way-or-another) Party on Friday night. Check out our advertisement in DM’s Latest Classified section up on the left, and our web site. This is NOT for little guys — ages 9 and up.
Also, we’ll be closing early Saturday night so that we can go trick-or-treating.
This year we are having the Oakhurst Huanted House at 630 East Lake Drive. We are in the old “mulligans” space next to Navo. We will be open both Friday and Sat. Oct 30th and 31st from 7pm to 11pm. Admission is a cash or can food donation with proceeds going towards feeding local needy families for Thanksgiving.
This is all volunteer based and produced. We have over 50 actors and 8 rooms of fright. It is not appropriate for small children. It is wonderful haunted house if you have not experienced it before.
When is that Scarendipity, and is it open to the public?
Well, so far, there’s Fernbank Fright Night & Scarendipity– anything else in the immediate area? We were going out of town, but aren’t now, so I was wondering, too. (Sorry, but the Oakhurst Haunted House & Graveyard Book Halloween don’t count as adult-oriented outings– even though they seem fun, “no small children” doesn’t mean “no children”, which is what it seemed the original inquirer was intimating…)
Scarendipity is a private invite-only party this year. I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade but I also don’t want any nice Halloween revelers showing up and not being able to get in.
It’s actually this weekend, but Oakland Cemetery is offering a Halloween Tour, Capturing the Spirit of of Oakland: http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/pdf/flyer_2009_1up.pdf
Something different! Lots of great history!
Sounds like Salli’s got a growing guest list of adult-like people looking for something to do and a great way to make some new friends – if only she’s willing to play hostess!
BOO! Scarendipity was at the top of my list. How might one wrangle an invite for next year??
Giving a party is too much work – I want to just be an attendee
I know there are some awards given out for best Xmas decorations each year and from this I take my kids around Decatur to check them out. I know there isn’t an award for best Halloween decorations to guide me but where can I find the best dressed Halloween houses in Decatur?
There’s a house on the corner of E. Pharr and either Garland or McLean that spooks it up nicely. That’s also a house off of East Lake Drive on 2nd Ave (across from the church) that has a graveyard in the front.
Corky – come on by Adair Street. Our pirate ship has arrived in port, along with some of the crew. Enough of them are already getting in trouble that I had to put up the jail today. More pirates to come, more lights, sound, fog coming soon.
The pirate house is always my Halloween favorite!!! My family enjoys stopping by every day to watch the progress.
The giant pumpkin house on Ponce across from Drexel is also fun. They usually have an inflatable haunted house for the kids to walk through on Halloween.
The Scarendipity party is at the mansion at 229 Howard Street. If you have the $20 donation to charity and a costume, they’ll let you in most likely–with 1000 people, i’m sure it’s not that private. go early, like 8 or 9.
