DHS Leadership Team Seeks Feedback on Improvement Plan
Decatur Metro | October 12, 2009President of Decatur High School’s Leadership Team, Lew Lefton, forwards a working draft of the high school’s “School Improvement Plan” (SIP), hoping for feedback from the community on the draft’s proposed “4 goals, 9 objectives, and a total of 38 action steps.”
Below, Lew summarizes the four overarching goals that make up this year’s SIP.
- Goal 1: All graduates will be prepared with appropriate career development options.
- Goal 2: Increase academic achievement by employing research-based teaching and learning practices.
- Goal 3: Increase academic achievement for Black students and the socioeconomically disadvantaged subgroup.
- Goal 4: Foster a safe, respectful school community where students demonstrate civic-mindedness
After the jump, Lew also provides some examples of selected objectives and actions to give us an idea of the SIP structure. Once you’ve digested the document, your welcome to provide feedback at SIPFeedback[at]csdecatur.net .
Objective 1.1: Students will engage in self-awareness and career awareness activities
Action 1.1.5: Maintain a yearly plan for each student based on assessments and parent/counselor conferences
Objective 2.2: DHS will achieve authorization as an IB MYP school
Action 2.2.4: IB teachers will collaborate to develop one IB interdisciplinary unit of instruction per subject per grade.
Objective 3.3: The participation of African American students in higher level or advanced classes will increase 3 percentage points annually.
Action 3.3.3: Create support group for African American students who are in an AP classes for the first time.
Objective 4.2: Increase student, staff, family and community satisfaction with school climate
Action 4.2.1: Update security cameras

Good work DHS SLT in circulating the school improvement plan like this. In a charter system, the school improvement plan is owned by the whole school community. Could DM ask for the other five school improvement plans to be posted too?
